Indian Govt Notifies iPhone Users About Spyware Attacks: Should You Worry?

The Indian government has notified iPhone users with regards to reports about threat notifications from Apple. This is usually done when the company detects spyware attacks on its devices and reaches out to the affected users via email and gives them the next course of action.

The government's security agency Indian Computer Emergency Response Team or CERT-In has shared the details on behalf of the tech giant which is likely to have more people worried as well as vigilant about their usage.

iPhone Spyware Attack Issue: What The Government Has Said

The new circular issued by CERT-In dated December 5 highlights the security risks of these attacks and warns about possible impact. “It is reported that Apple issued notifications to its users across the world including India about being targeted by mercenary spyware attacks who are trying to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with their Apple ID," the note says.

Apple is usually aware of these mercenary spyware attacks that target specific individuals so it manages to track these victims and inform them. The company doesn't share the details or who could be targeting them and that's mostly because of how it uses data and keeps them extremely private that is hard to read through.

iPhone Spyware Attack: What Apple Asks Users

The company has a clear mandate when these spyware attacks are detected and its communication with the users is clear and precise. “The notification also recommends users to take additional safeguards to protect data on their device, such as updating their iPhone (latest version iOS 26.1) and any other Apple devices they use to the latest software version, update messaging and clouds app to the latest available version, and enabling Lockdown Mode," the CERT-In corroborates what Apple asks its users.

The Lockdown mode has been designed to tackle such attacks and protect the users and their data which will be hard to breach, even for the most advanced bad actors.

The government is offering its own support by reaching out to the affected users and helping them with technical assistance. “Any user who has received such notification and wish to get their apple devices examined/ benefit from the technical assistance are requested to kindly reach out to CERT-In via email: submitmobile@cert-in.org.in," the agency has mentioned in its post.

The agency also mentions that users should not make any changes to the phone (resetting, deleting applications, updating, restarting etc.) as these actions could tamper evidence.
