Indias WPI inflation rose to 3.88 percent in March 2026, driven by crude oil, gas and metals, fuel turned positive, primary articles surged, food inflation stayed relatively stable
India’s wholesale inflation, measured by the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), rose to 3.88% in March 2026, marking a steady uptick from previous months. The rise highlights growing price pressures across key sectors such as fuel, primary articles, and manufactured goods.
The increase in WPI inflation was largely driven by a surge in crude petroleum and natural gas prices, along with higher costs in basic metals, chemicals, and food-related products. Primary articles recorded a sharp inflation of 6.36%, indicating rising costs at the raw material level.
Fuel and power, which had been in negative territory earlier, turned positive at 1.05%, mainly due to a spike in mineral oil prices. This shift played a key role in pushing overall inflation higher.
Primary Articles: Witnessed strong growth, led by crude oil and minerals
Fuel & Power: Rebounded due to rising energy prices
Manufactured Products: Maintained moderate inflation at 3.39%, showing stable industrial demand
Interestingly, the WPI Food Index remained stable at 1.85%, indicating that food inflation pressures were relatively contained despite volatility in vegetables and pulses.
On a monthly basis, WPI rose 1.64% in March, higher than February’s 0.38%. This suggests a strong short-term price momentum, particularly in fuel and primary goods.
The steady rise in WPI inflation signals increasing input costs for businesses, which may eventually pass on to consumers. If the trend continues, it could impact retail inflation, interest rates, and overall economic stability.
However, stable food inflation offers some relief, helping balance broader inflationary pressures.
