India stands firmly with affected family in Manipur: President Droupadi Murmu
President Droupadi Murmu assured Manipur's affected families of the government's unwavering support and commitment to restoring harmony and development. She inaugurated and laid foundation stones for 26 projects worth Rs 1387 crore, aimed at improving quality of life and boosting economic activities in the state.
Guwahati: President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday said that the government of India stands firmly with every affected family in Manipur and that addressing the concerns of the people is the government's highest priority.
Addressing a civic reception hosted in her honour by the Manipur government at the City Convention Centre, the President said that the people of Manipur had witnessed “unfortunate violence for several months”, and the Centre is fully aware of the hardships faced by them.
She said the government is committed to strengthening harmony, ensuring security and supporting Manipur in its journey towards development.
She added the government has taken a series of steps to promote equitable development in Manipur and to ensure that progress reaches every corner of the state
She said that the government has undertaken several schemes and projects to develop connectivity, health and education, infrastructure, and rural development, which have brought tangible improvements to the state.
The President laid foundation stones of 14 projects worth Rs 1180 crore and inaugurated 12 projects worth Rs 207 crore for different parts of Manipur.
These projects relate to education, sports, health, tribal development, agriculture, power and renewable energy, construction of guest houses, training facilities, community and security infrastructure, Ima markets (all-women markets), traditional industries, handloom and handicrafts, urban development, roads and public services.
The President said these initiatives would improve the quality of life of the people of Manipur.
“These new projects will boost tribal development and help build a more modern and inclusive Manipur. They will generate employment and accelerate economic activities,” she pointed out.
The state has been under President's Rule since February 13 this year, following prolonged ethnic violence. This is her maiden visit to the state after assuming the office.
Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla received President Murmu at Imphal's Bir Tikendrajit Airport.
The President was accorded a guard of honour on her arrival. Manipur Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel, Chief Security Advisor to the Manipur government Kuldiep Singh, Director General of Police Rajiv Singh.
The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC), the apex body of the Kuki-Zo tribals in Manipur, warmly welcomes President Murmu on her visit to the state.
Normal life has been partially affected in the Imphal Valley region due to a shutdown called by a conglomeration of banned outfits, Coordination Committee (CorCom), in protest of President Murmu's visit, from 1 am on Thursday till her departure.
She visited the historic Imphal Polo Ground (Mapal Kangjeibung) to witness a polo exhibition match.
On Friday, the President will visit the Nupi Lal Memorial Complex at Imphal and pay her respects to the brave women warriors of Manipur.
Later, at Senapati, a Naga-inhabited district, she will address a public function, during which she will lay foundation stones and inaugurate various projects for the district.
Opposition Congress has urged the President to dissolve the current 12th Manipur Assembly and conduct fresh elections for the 13th Legislative Assembly within six months of its dissolution, "thereby restoring democratic governance and ensuring that the will and voice of the people are duly honoured".
Manipur state Congress President Keisham Meghachandra Singh, in a letter to the President through the state Governor, said that the people of the state expect the high office of the President to take urgent and decisive steps to restore peace, harmony, and normalcy.
Singh urged President Murmu to ensure the return of all violence-hit internally displaced persons to their original homes in their respective districts within a notified timeframe.
The Congress leader demanded free movement of people by road, air, or water and "protection" of the fundamental rights of all citizens of Manipur.
