India's FIH Men's Junior World Cup Dreams Crushed With 5-1 Semifinal Loss To Germany
India's hopes of reclaiming the FIH Men's Junior World Cup after nine years were dashed as they lost 1-5 to seven-time champions and defending titleholders Germany in the semifinal on Sunday.
India had last claimed the Junior World Cup in 2016 in Lucknow.
Germany's dominance was evident with goals from Lukas Kossel (14th, 30th minutes), Titus Wex (15th), Jonas von Gersum (40th), and Ben Hasbach (49th).
India managed to score in the 51st minute with a penalty-corner conversion by Anmol Ekka.
India will now contest the bronze medal against Argentina on Wednesday, while Germany will face Spain in the final.
Earlier, Spain defeated Argentina 2-1 in the first semifinal.
India began the match positively, but Germany gradually took control.
Germany had their first chance in the eighth minute, but goalkeeper Princedeep Singh denied Ben Hasbach's reverse hit.
Gaining confidence, Germany secured their first penalty corner in the 13th minute.
A penalty stroke was awarded to Germany when the goal-mouth flick from the resultant penalty corner hit an Indian defender, and Lukas Kossel slotted home the goal.
Germany doubled their lead at the end of the first quarter when Wex deflected a cross from Kossel.
Just 11 seconds before halftime, Germany secured their second penalty corner, and Kossel scored again, giving the reigning champions a 3-0 lead.
India had an opportunity to score three minutes into the second half, but Sourabh Anand Kushwaha missed in front of an open goal.
Germany continued to dominate, with India struggling to keep up.
Germany earned back-to-back penalty corners in the 36th minute but missed both chances.
Their persistence paid off in the 40th minute when Jonas von Gersum deflected a high ball into the goal.
Germany continued to press and secured their fourth penalty corner in the 42nd minute, which India defended well.
Germany extended their lead to 5-0 in the 49th minute through Hasbach, who scored a diving goal past goalkeeper Bikramjit Singh after receiving an aerial ball.
India secured back-to-back penalty corners in the 51st minute, and Anmol scored from a variation effort.
Despite pressing hard, India couldn't alter the outcome as the match was already decided.
