India-Pakistan To Clash In Under-19 World Cup Next Week Amid Bubbling Tensions
Fate has once again pitted India and Pakistan against each other on the world stage. The Ayush Mhatre-led India Under-19's huge win over New Zealand on Saturday means they'll clash with the ‘Boys in Green' in the Super Sixes on February 1 in Bulawayo.
India finished B1, as the table-toppers in group B. Pakistan, meanwhile, finished C2, i.e., second in group C.
According to the tournament's format, three teams from each of the four groups qualify for the Super Sixes. Groups B and C have combined to form one group for this round, while groups A and D make up the other.
Each team plays two matches here, against opponents who didn't finish at the same ranking in the group they meet. So, India will play against C2 and C3, which is Zimbabwe, on January 27 in Bulawayo and Pakistan will play against B1 and B3, which is New Zealand.
While Pakistan lost one match, to England, in the first round, India put up an excellent unbeaten run. They brushed past the USA with a six-wicket win in a rain-marred game before making a stellar second-innings comeback to secure a narrow 17-run win (DLS method, again) over Bangladesh.
India cruised to a commanding seven-wicket win over the Kiwis via the DLS method in yet another rain-hit clash, with skipper Mhatre setting the tone.
Put in to bat in damp conditions in a 37-overs-a-side contest, New Zealand never found momentum. India's bowlers struck early and often, reducing the Kiwis to 69 for seven. RS Ambrish spearheaded the attack with a superb four-wicket haul, while Henil Patel offered strong support with three scalps. Callum Samson top-scored with 37, and late contributions from Jacob Cotter and Selwin Sanjay lifted New Zealand to 135 before they were dismissed in the 37th over.
India's revised chase of 130 was over almost as soon as it began. After an early wicket, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Mhatre added 76 in quick time, both scoring at a brisk pace. Mhatre smashed a 27-ball fifty, while Sooryavanshi chipped in with 40. Unbeaten cameos from Vihaan Malhotra and Vedant Trivedi sealed the win in 13.3 overs, confirming India's third straight victory.
India and Pakistan's Under-19 teams met twice in the Under-19 2025 Asia Cup a few weeks ago. Both matches got a bit heated, more so the second game, which was the final, where Pakistan won.
Cricketing tensions between India and Pakistan have been bubbling since the senior Asia Cup last year, which happened only weeks after the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. Some of it has seeped into the age-group level, too, which didn't used to be the case a few years ago.
Handshakes and send-offs will again be watched closely in this game.
