Ranchi thriller: India beat SA by 17 runs to take 1-0 lead in three-match series
The ODI series kicked off with a thrilling victory for India in Ranchi, where they outlasted South Africa by 17 runs. Pacer Prasidh Krishna was the hero of the hour, displaying grit in the tense final over. India's bowlers managed to dismiss South Africa for 332, while Kuldeep Yadav emerged as the star, bagging four wickets.
India made a strong start to their ODI campaign in Ranchi on Sunday, bouncing back from a bruising 2-0 Test series defeat. Pacer Prasidh Krishna held his nerve in a tense final over to secure a 17-run victory over South Africa. Defending 350, India bowled out the visitors for 332 in 49.2 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
With South Africa needing 18 off the last over, Prasidh began with a dot ball before dismissing Corbin Bosch, who kept the chase alive with an impressive 67 off 51 balls. Arshdeep Singh earlier removed Nandre Burger (17).
Kuldeep Yadav swung the match decisively in India's favour, removing Matthew Breetzke and Marco Jansen in the same over to snatch back complete control of the contest. Before that turning point, Jansen had unleashed a blistering 26-ball half-century, flipping the momentum and dragging South Africa back into the game at a stage when India were rapidly running out of answers.
Harshit Rana then delivered a crucial breakthrough, ending Dewald Brevis' explosive counter-attack just as the young batter looked poised to tilt the chase further South Africa's way. Kuldeep continued to break the visitors' resistance, dismissing a battling Tony de Zorzi for 39 — a moment that drew an electrifying roar from Virat Kohli, who whipped the Ranchi crowd into a frenzy as India tightened their grip on the match.
Earlier in the day, South Africa opted to bowl first, only to be met with a vintage Virat Kohli masterpiece. The former captain blasted a 102-ball century — his 52nd in ODIs — setting a new world record for the most tons in a single international format. KL Rahul contributed a composed 60, and Rohit Sharma added a fluent 57, laying the foundation for India's strong total.
