Weather update: IMD forecasts rain, snowfall as western disturbance hits North India | Check forecast
Weather Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rain, snowfall and dense fog across several regions until February 10 under the influence of a western disturbance, signalling an active spell of weather in North India over the next few days.
The IMD has predicted continued precipitation over Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh until February 11. From February 9 onwards, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are likely to see intermittent to widespread rain and snowfall. Isolated thunderstorms, lightning and strong surface winds of 30-40 kmph may occur, with February 10 expected to witness peak activity.
Persistent fog is likely across parts of the northern plains, prompting the IMD to issue an orange alert for Uttar Pradesh. Dense to very dense fog may affect Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand during night and early morning hours until February 10. Similar visibility issues are also possible in northern Tamil Nadu, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry and Karaikal during morning hours.
Delhi recorded a cold start to the day on Monday, though the western disturbance is not expected to bring rainfall to the city. Foggy conditions and reduced visibility may continue during early mornings for the next couple of days. As per CPCB data, the city's air quality remained in the ‘poor' category, with the AQI recorded at 209 at 8 am.
The weather office has projected a gradual increase in minimum temperatures across northwest India, including Delhi, by nearly 2 degree celsius over the next two days. Daytime temperatures are likely to remain in the mid-20s degree celsius range, while nights may stay cool. No coldwave conditions are anticipated. The city is expected to see light haze and partly cloudy skies during daytime hours.
Mountain regions are expected to face the strongest impact of the system, with fresh snowfall in higher altitudes and rain in lower areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The IMD has warned that thunderstorms and gusty winds could disrupt travel, especially in sensitive hill terrain.
Residents, tourists and commuters have been advised to stay cautious, particularly in landslide-prone zones and areas susceptible to snow buildup. Temporary disruptions to transport services in higher reaches cannot be ruled out during periods of intense weather activity.
