IDF Says It Eliminated Hamas Jailer Who Psychologically Tortured Six Israeli Captives

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet security agency said that they eliminated a Hamas operative previously responsible for guarding six Israeli hostages in an airstrike last week.

The IDF made the announcement of his elimination of Wednesday via a social media post and said that Hamas operative Zaid Zaki Abd al-Hadi Aql was eliminated “as part of IDF strikes following Hamas' blatant violations of the ceasefire agreement".

“Hamas terrorist Zaid Zaki Abd al-Hadi Aql who was responsible for holding six Israeli hostages captive. Aql was responsible for the captivity of Bar Kuperstein, Ohad Ben Ami, Maxim Herkin, Elkana Bohbot, Segev Kalfon, and Yosef-Haim Ohana, who were abducted into Gaza during Hamas' brutal October 7 massacre," the IDF said in its social media post.

According to Israeli news outlet Ynet, Aql was guarding survivors of severe abuse and psychological torture. He also took part in psychologically torturing hostages, a released hostage said.

Aql was killed on October 29 in a strike led by Southern Command and carried out by the Israeli Air Force.

According to Kupershtein's mother, the captives endured severe psychological and physical torture while being held by Hamas in Gaza. In a chilling account, she said their captors had once forced them to make an impossible choice, ordering them to decide which among them would be executed.

“The terrorists came and said: ‘Pick three out of the six — we're killing three now. You decide who dies,'" she recalled. “Bar sat aside and said, ‘I am in God's hands.'

In a separate interview with Army Radio, she spoke about the harrowing abuse her son and the other hostages suffered in captivity. “They went through harsh torture, really severe abuse, starvation, worse than anything. No one treats animals this way," she said.

She described her son's resilience. “He tells me what happened, and I sit in front of him crying, realising my child is strong and brave like no one else in the world. And then he tells me, ‘Mom, they beat me, but I didn't feel it — my body was frozen.'"
