ICICI Bank launches biometric authentication for UPI payments on iMobile: Here’s how it works
ICICI Bank on Wednesday said it has introduced biometric authentication for UPI transactions on its mobile banking app, iMobile, allowing customers to approve eligible payments using fingerprint or face recognition instead of entering a UPI PIN every time.
The new feature can be used for UPI transactions up to Rs 5,000. For payments above this limit, customers will still need to enter their existing UPI PIN.
The move is aimed at making payments faster and more secure, especially in public places where manually entering a PIN may expose users to shoulder-surfing risks.
Customers can use biometric approval for multiple UPI payment modes, including sending money to another person, scanning QR codes for shop payments, online merchant transactions, and Android and iPhone support.
The feature is available on the latest versions of the iMobile app, including Android Version 30 and above (fingerprint authentication) and iPhone iOS 28.2 and above (Face ID authentication).
Users can activate the feature in a few steps:
According to the bank, the new feature is designed to offer both convenience and stronger security. Customers can continue using either PIN-based authentication or switch to biometrics depending on their preference.
With UPI becoming India’s most-used payment method, biometric approval could help reduce friction in everyday transactions while improving payment security. It may also encourage wider use of contactless and quick digital payments among smartphone users.
