‘I Wouldn’t Have Done It’: Dharmendra’s First Wife Prakash Kaur’s Rare Comment On Hema Malini Marrying Him

Hema Malini and Dharmendra's love story has always carried a shadow of complexity, but after the legendary actor's death on November 24, an old comment by his first wife Prakash Kaur has resurfaced and sparked fresh conversation online. Hema Malini, the reigning ‘Dream Girl' of Bollywood, and Dharmendra, the ultimate He-man, fell head over heels on the sets of Tum Haseen Main Jawan. But there was one big twist — Dharmendra was already married to Prakash Kaur.

For decades, the two families lived parallel lives. Dharmendra remained married to Prakash Kaur, with whom he had four children, even as he built a separate home with Hema Malini and their daughters Esha and Ahana. Hema once shared that she met Prakash only before the wedding and never again afterwards. She raised her daughters on her own, while Dharmendra visited often, but stayed committed to both families in his own way.

What many didn't know is that one member of Dharmendra's family did reach out to Hema early on. His mother, Satwant Kaur, visited Hema when Esha was born, marking a rare moment of connection between the two households.

Prakash Kaur on Hema Malini

Dharmendra married Prakash Kaur in 1954, long before fame found him. When he later fell in love with Hema Malini, Prakash was vocal about her disapproval. In an old interview now being widely circulated again, Prakash said, “If I were in Hema's place, I would not have done what she did. For, as a woman, I can understand her feelings. But as a wife and a mother, I do not approve of them." She added that while she understood Hema's emotional side, she could never accept her choice as a wife who had built a life with Dharmendra long before he became a superstar.

Hema Malini and Dharmendra's complicated marriage

Dharmendra and Hema married in 1980, after reportedly converting to another faith to avoid the need for a divorce. In a move that left everyone talking, they reportedly converted to Islam to get married, with Dharmendra adopting the name Dilawar Khan and Hema becoming Aisha Bi. They had a private Nikah ceremony in 1980, and later, to honour Hema's roots, they even had an Iyengar-style wedding.
