Hyderabad Single Mother Drives Uber To Support Her 3 Kids, Internet Salutes Her: ‘Empowerment Isn’t Just A Buzzword’
When it comes to women's empowerment, everyday stories often leave the strongest impact. Recently, a Hyderabad-based man shared an inspiring story after meeting a single mother working as an Uber driver in the city.
Suresh Kochattil, who works as a journalist, shared his experience on Facebook, recounting how a routine cab between television studios during Union Budget debates turned into a memorable encounter. He wrote that after two drivers cancelled his booking, Uber assigned a third driver, and he was surprised to see a woman's name appear on the app.
Single mother working as Uber driver
“Today, I was using cabs to travel from one studio to another for the Union Budget debates. When I booked a cab from Nationalist Hub to 99TV in Hyderabad, two of the drivers cancelled after accepting the booking."
He revealed that the driver, Nandini, has been working with Uber for the past year and is a single mother of three children. Originally from Vijayawada, she moved to Hyderabad in search of better opportunities and now drives to support her family and fund her children's education.
“These days when women's empowerment is bandied about in the media – here is a wonderful example of how a lady overcame adversity and keeps working hard," he wrote.
Social media reactions
The post quickly gained attention on social media, with many people praising the woman's admiration, and some even shared their own experiences.
One person wrote, “Though single mother is unwelcome, Nandini is facing the world boldly," while another commented, “Appreciate her courage to take up such a job for living. Hats off to her." Someone added, “Empowerment isn't just a buzzword."
A third user commented, “Great to see such dynamic women, suggestion to Uber and Ola to create separate options for lady travellers to choose lady drivers and options to lady drivers to cancel requests if any passenger misuse in disguise of a woman passenger and such passengers be blocked in app."
One user shared a similar story. “I have seen women working as a delivery person in Flipkart, riding an e rickshaw as well. Women are working hard for their family," he commented. “In Delhi, I have seen Autorickshaws and e-rickshaws driven by women," wrote the next.
Earlier, a video went viral of a woman in Bengaluru driving an auto rickshaw, following her love for driving.
