Hyderabad Metro Deploys 20 Transgender Personnel In Major Push For Safety And Inclusivity

In a significant move to enhance both security and inclusivity, Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) has inducted 20 transgender personnel into its frontline security services, marking a major milestone in the city's efforts to promote equality and strengthen commuter safety.

After completing their induction and security training, the recruits formally took up duties on Monday across selected Metro stations and trains. Their deployment forms part of HMRL's broader mission to create a safer, more welcoming environment, particularly for women passengers.

Hyderabad Metro Rail, one of the country's largest urban transit systems, operates across three busy corridors with 57 stations. Serving nearly five lakh commuters each day, around 30% of whom are women, the Metro has long prioritised safety and comfort. The engagement of transgender personnel reinforces these objectives while advancing social inclusion.

This initiative reflects the Telangana government's ongoing commitment to dignity, representation, and equal opportunity for marginalised communities. Over the past year, the state has begun recruiting transgender individuals into public service roles, including Assistant Traffic Marshals, signalling a systematic effort to integrate transgender citizens into the workforce.

HMRL's latest step positions the Metro as a leading example of this policy in practice. The visible presence of transgender security staff is expected to not only enhance women's safety but also foster a more inclusive public atmosphere, where diversity is recognised and respected.

Sarfaraz Ahmad, Managing Director of HMRL described the induction as “a source of immense pride for the Hyderabad Metro family", adding that it represents both security enhancement and a strong commitment to social empowerment. He emphasised that their involvement would help reassure women commuters and ensure the Metro “remains a space where every citizen travels with confidence and respect".

The transgender personnel will be deployed across various operational zones, including general concourse areas and ladies-only coaches. Their responsibilities include assisting passengers with directions, providing information, helping with baggage scanning, and supporting overall station management. They will also maintain a steady security presence across street-level and concourse areas, contributing to a smoother and safer travel experience.
