How To Spot And Prevent Chronic Inflammation In The Body

Inflammation is a biochemical reaction in the body considered safe upon temporary occurrence, but seriously harmful to individuals if the condition persists or reaches a chronic stage. Medical experts have found continuous inflammation to be a threat to body tissues, one that also raises the risk of heart diseases, diabetes, arthritis and potential cancer.

Here is why we need to understand the difference between helpful inflammation and chronic and damaging inflammation to prevent long-term implications.

According to the US National Centre for Biotechnology Information, inflammation is the body's coordinated immune reaction, where our cells sense damage or microbes and release molecules signalling a threat. Initial inflammation can be lifesaving in individuals, as molecules dilate blood vessels, increase blood flow and make vessels holey for immune cells and repair factors to efficiently reach the target sites.

While this process is going on, the body shows common signs of inflammation, including redness, heat, swelling, pain and in certain cases, temporary loss of function. The good inflammation, also called acute inflammation, is thus the body's quick and targeted response to injuries, infections or irritants. It appears almost immediately upon effect and only lasts a few days.

Inflammation that persists too long is considered harmful and is called chronic inflammation. As per the US-based National Library of Medicine, the basic difference between acute and chronic inflammation is observed in duration, intensity, and impact on tissues and organs. A chronic inflammation occurs when the immune system stays activated for weeks, months and sometimes years. While acute inflammation is a repairing process, chronic inflammation instead damages the tissues.

This dangerous form of inflammation is caused when the body is exposed to continuous triggers and the immune system stays activated for lengthy periods. A few of the major causes of long-term inflammation are unresolved or persistent infections, a sedentary lifestyle leading to excess body fat or even obesity, poor diets including processed meat, refined carbs and heavy sugar intake.

One of the major contributors in today's age is the oxidative stress experienced by individuals due to the consumption of tobacco and alcohol, as well as inhaling polluted air. Psychological stress may also be a major cause of chronic inflammation in the long run.

Chronic inflammation often silently persists in the body and can only be detected and diagnosed by professionals and experts. C-reactive protein (CRP), Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR), Interleukin-6 (IL-6), or Complete Blood Count (CBC) are some of the tests linked with inflammation diagnosis.

However, researchers have also associated certain symptoms with the problem that individuals can spot early. These include frequent tiredness, low energy, bone and muscle aches, drastic weight gain or loss, slow healing of wounds, compromised attention spans and concentration.

The prevention of chronic inflammation lies in the basics of a good lifestyle. Individuals should try to consume a balanced diet containing all the essential nutrients the body requires, taking time out for regular physical activity, embracing stress management exercises and avoiding tobacco, smoking and alcohol.
