How Rising AQI Levels Are Silently Damaging Your Eyes And What You Can Do
City living has its own rhythm with fast commutes, bright screens, and endless concrete. But there's one invisible factor shaping everyday comfort far more than we realise: the air. As pollution rises across urban India, its impact on the eyes is becoming increasingly noticeable. What begins as mild irritation often evolves into persistent dryness, redness, and inflammation. With particulate matter, smoke, and chemicals constantly suspended in the air, the eyes, our most exposed sensory organ, take a direct hit every single day.
According to Dr. Rashmi, Retina Specialist, Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital, Hassan, pollution levels directly influence ocular comfort. “For comfortable eye health, an AQI of 0–100 is generally acceptable, though people with sensitive eyes may experience irritation even when AQI is above 50," she explains. As pollution levels rise, the risks escalate. “When AQI crosses 100, the chances of redness, burning, watering, and long-term ocular surface changes increase significantly," she adds.
These pollutants disrupt the tear film, trigger reflex tearing, worsen allergies, and intensify symptoms of dry eye disease. Over time, prolonged exposure can weaken the eye's natural defences, making irritation a daily struggle rather than an occasional inconvenience.
Urban environments introduce multiple irritants at once – dust-laden air, vehicle emissions, construction debris, and harsh weather. Dr. Rashmi notes that these environmental factors often combine with digital habits, amplifying discomfort. Hours spent on screens reduce blinking frequency, drying out the eyes faster than usual. Together, pollution and screen fatigue create a cycle of strain that's hard to break.
To counter the effects of pollution, Dr. Rashmi recommends adopting a preventive, routine-based approach.
“Make checking AQI a daily habit," she advises. For sensitive individuals, any reading above 50 warrants caution, while levels above 100 call for protective action. She emphasises shielding the eyes physically: “Goggles act as a barrier against pollutants, dust, and wind."
Lubrication is key. Preservative-free artificial tears used two to three times a day help flush out irritants and restore moisture. “Avoid rubbing your eyes," she warns, as friction can worsen inflammation or introduce more allergens.
Digital strain also needs structured care. Dr. Rashmi reinforces the 20–20–20 rule: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds to relax the eye muscles.

Internal hydration and nutrition play a quiet but crucial role too. Foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E, such as carrots, spinach, nuts, and citrus fruits, strengthen the eye surface and help combat oxidative stress. Cold compresses offer instant relief on days when pollution spikes, and regular eye check-ups ensure that long-term damage doesn't go unnoticed.
Pollution may be unavoidable, but its effects don't have to be. With mindful habits, protective measures, and early intervention, it's possible to maintain clear, comfortable vision even in high-AQI environments. Caring for your eyes daily is no longer optional; it's a necessary part of modern urban living.
