How New-Generation Eye Treatments Are Redefining Relief For Chronic Dry Eyes
In today's fast-paced, screen-driven world, eye health is under constant pressure. Prolonged exposure to digital screens, excessive use of mobile phones and laptops, rising pollution levels, air-conditioned environments, hormonal changes, stress, and certain medications have all contributed to dry eye disease becoming one of the most common eye conditions of our time. What was once dismissed as a minor irritation has now evolved into a chronic lifestyle disorder that can significantly affect visual comfort, work productivity, and overall quality of life.
“Dry eye is no longer just about occasional discomfort, it's a condition that can interfere with how people function every single day," says Dr Parul Sony, Founder and Director, Complete Eye Care, Gurugram.
Recognising the growing burden of dry eye disease, advanced technologies such as Lumecca IPL and Forma-I are reshaping how the condition is managed. These first-of-their-kind treatments in Delhi-NCR, introduced by Complete Eye Care, mark a significant shift in eye care. “Unlike traditional approaches that only provide temporary relief, these technologies focus on correcting the underlying cause of dry eye," explains Dr Sony. “That's where long-term improvement truly begins."
Dry eye disease commonly stems from dysfunction of the meibomian glands, which produce the oily layer of the tear film. When these glands become blocked or underperform, tears evaporate too quickly, leading to symptoms such as dryness, burning, redness, foreign-body sensation, blurred vision, eye fatigue, and even frequent headaches. “Most patients rely heavily on lubricating eye drops, but these don't restore gland function," Dr Sony notes. “They manage symptoms, not the disease."
Lumecca IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) addresses this gap by delivering targeted light energy to the eyelids and surrounding periocular area. This therapy reduces inflammation, improves blood circulation, and treats abnormal blood vessels that contribute to chronic dry eye. It also lowers bacterial load along the eyelid margins, creating a healthier environment for gland function. “Lumecca IPL is USFDA-approved and particularly effective for moderate to severe dry eye linked to meibomian gland dysfunction," says Dr Sony.
Forma-I complements this approach using controlled radiofrequency-based heat therapy. The gentle warmth softens thickened oils trapped inside the glands, allowing them to flow freely again. “By restoring natural oil secretion, Forma-I stabilises the tear film and reduces tear evaporation," Dr Sony explains. “Patients experience sustained relief rather than short-lived comfort."
One of the most reassuring aspects of both treatments is their ease and safety. “These procedures are non-invasive, painless, and require no downtime," Dr Sony emphasises. “Patients can return to their normal routine immediately after the session." Over a series of treatments, many notice improved eye comfort, clearer vision, and a reduced dependence on eye drops.
