QS Rankings: How IIT Delhi Stayed India’s Top Performer With 5 Subjects In Top 50
The latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 confirm India’s growing strength on the global stage. This year, 12 Indian institutions have secured 27 positions in the global top 50 across various subjects – more than double the number in 2024. This demonstrates how Indian institutions are now competing with universities in developed countries in terms of quality and research.
IIT Delhi has delivered the strongest performance, with five of its engineering disciplines placed in the global top 50. The IIT emerged as India’s best-performing institution this year, securing 36th place globally in Engineering and Technology. Its five core disciplines—Electrical (36), Mechanical (44), Computer Science (45), Chemical (48), and Civil Engineering (50)—are all ranked within the global top 50.
In 2025, IIT Delhi ranked 26th globally in engineering while the Indian School of Mines (ISM) University, Dhanbad, secured 20th position globally in the mineral and mining engineering category. IIT Delhi secured 47 rank in Electrical, 61 in Mechanical, 64 in Computer Science, 93 in Chemical, and 51-100 in Civil.
Speaking about the rankings, Dr. P.M.V Subbarao, HoD, Mechanical Engineering, said, “The improved ranking is a reflection of our unwavering commitment to engineering excellence. Fundamentally, we continued what we have been doing and simultaneously pioneered AI-integrated technologies—which gives us the confidence that we are on a progressive track, and ranks follow the good work we do."
Prof. Somnath Baidya Roy, Dean (Planning), and Head, Ranking Cell, IIT Delhi, said “Even though rankings do not capture the entire gamut of our activities, they are definitely an acknowledgement of the hard work we put in."
Meanwhile, IIT Bombay has also demonstrated its strength by attaining 36th position in Mineral and Mining Engineering. IIT Bombay was placed 28th in engineering with a score of 82.3 and also ranked 192nd in the arts category.
Management And Other Categories
IIM Ahmedabad has made history by achieving a global rank of 21st in the newly introduced subject of Marketing. Notably, 44% of India’s entries have improved their positions this year – the fastest rate of improvement among all major education systems worldwide. Beyond engineering and technology, Indian institutions have also performed strongly in management and life sciences.
Additionally, IIM Bangalore (29) and IIM Kolkata (47) have also secured places in the top 50.
Progress is evident beyond the traditional engineering hubs too. JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University) has retained its global rank of 26th in ‘Development Studies’. BITS Pilani has made a notable jump to 45th in Pharmacy and Pharmacology. AIIMS Delhi has improved its Medicine ranking to 105th globally, one of the best-ever positions for an Indian medical college.
India leads the world in the pace of improvement. According to QS data, 265 of India’s 599 entries improved their rankings. This 44% improvement rate is higher than that of the UK (40%), Germany (27%), and China (24%). India is now the fourth most represented country in the world. A 65% increase in research output by institutions and rising confidence among leading global companies have been key drivers of this historic performance.
