How Bhashini’s Language AI Platform Is Transforming Digital Inclusion Across India

How Bhashini’s Language AI Platform Is Transforming Digital Inclusion Across India

India's digital ecosystem is expanding at record speed, but millions remain excluded due to language barriers, digital illiteracy and limited tech exposure. In an exclusive ET AI Podcast conversation, Amitabh Nag, CEO of Digital India Bhashini Division, unpacks how language AI can fundamentally transform this reality. From multilingual panchayats to voice-enabled governance and enterprise-scale deployments, Bhashini is redefining access, empowerment and customer engagement.

How Bhashini Is Redefining Access, Inclusivity and Innovation

India's digital economy has scaled rapidly, yet a significant portion of the population still stands on the wrong side of the language and literacy divide. A country with more than 100 spoken languages and hundreds of dialects cannot unlock true digital participation unless technology speaks the way people do. In the recent ET AI Podcast, Amitabh Nag, CEO of Digital India Bhashini Division, outlined how language AI is becoming the backbone of India's next wave of digital inclusion.

Why Bhashini Exists

Nag frames the mandate clearly. India's digital systems were built in English first, leaving millions unable to understand interfaces, instructions or information. At the same time, a large segment of the population still struggles with digital literacy and requires intuitive, voice-based interactions.

Bhashini's mission is to transcend this divide through five core capabilities. Automatic speech recognition that understands speech across 22 constitutionally recognised languages. Text-to-text translation unlocks seamless multilingualism. Text-to-speech systems that allow platforms to talk back to users. Optical character recognition that converts scanned text into machine-readable formats. And finally, a growing digital vocabulary that captures India's cultures, dishes, clothing and everyday terms.

In short, the platform is designed to make digital systems understand the user rather than forcing the user to understand the system.

Impact On the Everyday User

For everyday Indians, the impact is immediate. From accessing banking, insurance and healthcare information to navigating government services, language AI removes the friction that English and complex interfaces have traditionally created.

Voice journeys transform how users interact with apps. Instead of figuring out menu structures, they can simply speak their intent. Multilingual interfaces empower users to operate in their mother tongue. And as Nag emphasises, the long-standing myth that language proficiency equals knowledge starts to fade. Users can now think, learn and transact in the language they are most comfortable with.

What Has Changed in the Last 18 Months

Nag highlights two major shifts. First, technology has finally caught up. GPU power, cloud infrastructure and model advancements have made voice and language systems faster and far more accurate. Second, user adoption has accelerated sharply. Indians are experimenting with AI tools at scale, which in turn strengthens the models through continuous feedback.

The result is a leap in both capability and confidence, enabling real-world deployments at unprecedented speed.

Early Success Stories

One of Bhashini's most significant breakthroughs is its adoption across India's panchayats. The E-gram Swaraj platform is now multilingual. Panchayats record minutes in native languages, upload audio, and the system automatically transcribes and translates it. Over 90,000 such recordings have already been processed.

The platform is also enabling transcription and translation of parliamentary proceedings, digitisation of historic documents and multilingual access for hundreds of government websites. Banking, payments, citizen services, and grievance systems are deploying voice technologies across narrow, high-value use cases.

What This Means for Enterprises

Nag offers a clear blueprint for CEOs aiming to scale in tier 2 to tier 4 India. Make product information available in local languages. Enable voice as a primary interaction layer. Build multilingual customer feedback loops. Extend voice capabilities to operations, inventory tracking, payments and on-ground workflows.

The value proposition is twofold. Deeper market penetration and significantly higher internal efficiency. As Nag notes, multilingualism is no longer a redevelopment challenge. Bhashini offers plug-and-play integrations that allow platforms to go multilingual in days.

The Road Ahead

Language AI is shifting from a support function to an essential capability. Accuracy will continue to improve through domain-specific glossaries and human-in-the-loop systems. Sensitive sectors such as healthcare and finance will run layered approvals to ensure reliability. Over time, interfaces move beyond screens toward voice-first interactions for both convenience and productivity.

India's digital future will not be built on English alone. It will be built on inclusivity, local languages and intuitive voice-based systems. Bhashini is positioning itself at the centre of that transformation.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
