‘Hindu Ho Jaye Phir Try Kare’: Anup Jalota Asks AR Rahman To Convert Back From Islam To Get Work
Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman may have clarified his stand after facing backlash for an alleged “communal" remark, but the reactions around it are far from dying down. The latest and most pointed response has come from singer Anup Jalota, who has openly criticised Rahman and made a controversial suggestion that has sparked sharp reactions online.
A video of Anup Jalota reacting to Rahman's comments has surfaced on social media. In the clip, as quoted in HT, Jalota makes it clear that he does not agree with Rahman's views and goes on to reference the composer's religious identity. In the video, Anup is heard saying, “Music director AR Rahman pehle Hindu the. Uske baad unhone Islam dharm apna liya aur bahut kaam kiya, bahut naam kamaya, logon ke dilon mein bahut achchi jagah banayi. Lekin agar unhein is baat ka vishwas hai ki hamare desh mein Muslim hone ki wajah se unko filmein nahi mil rahi hain music dene ke liye, toh phir woh dobara Hindu ho jaayein."
He continued, “Toh unko yeh vishwas hona chahiye ki Hindu hone ke baad, convert ho jaane ke baad, unko phir se filmein milna shuru ho jaayengi. Yahi toh unka matlab hai. Toh mera salah hai ki woh Hindu ho jaayein aur phir try karein ki unko dobara filmein milti hain ya nahi," he added.

What AR Rahman actually said
The controversy traces back to Rahman's interview with BBC Asian Network, where he spoke candidly about how his equation with Hindi cinema has changed over the years.
Reflecting on the past eight years, Rahman said, “Maybe in the past eight years, because a power shift has happened and people who are not creative have the power now," he said. “It might be a communal thing also… but it is not in my face. It comes to me as Chinese whispers."
Rahman also stressed that he does not chase work and believes sincerity should naturally bring opportunities. He added that the slowdown has not shaken his confidence or inner peace.
When asked whether prejudice against non-Maharashtrian or South Indian artistes exists in Bollywood, Rahman said he had never experienced it directly.
