A cold wave has gripped several parts of Himachal Pradesh and the Meteorological Center has predicted light to moderate snowfall in the state. The residents of Shimla and Manali woke up to snowfall on Friday morning, with the Shimla Meteorological Centre predicting heavy snowfall and rainfall in Himachal Pradesh for January 23. An orange alert has been issued for three Himachal districts and a yellow alert for nine. An orange alert is issued in case of extremely bad weather. It affects the transport facilities including rail, road and air.

The ‘orange alert' has been issued for Kullu, Chamba, Lahaul and Spiti, with a forecast of heavy snowfall along with rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds at isolated places in these districts. The ‘yellow alert' has been issued for Shimla, Kangra, Mandi, Solan, Sirmour, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kinnaur and Una districts, with the prediction of heavy rain along with hail, cold day, thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places.

The MeT department has also predicted snowfall and rainfall in the middle and higher hills of the state for January 24, dry weather across the state for January 25 and another spell of heavy snowfall and rainfall from January 26 till January 28.
The weather was mostly dry in Himachal Pradesh during the last 24 hours. Places such as Hamirpur witnessed severe cold wave conditions, while Mandi, Una, Kangra and Bilaspur experienced cold wave conditions. The Tabo village in the Lahaul and Spiti district was the coldest in the state as it recorded minus 8.7 degrees Celsius minimum temperature.
According to the IMD forecast, Manali may witness rainfall or snowfall today and the maximum and minimum temperatures likely to hover around 8 degrees Celsius and 0 degrees Celsius, respectively. The temperatures in Manali may drop further in the coming days with the minimum temperature plunging to -1 degree Celsius on January 25 and 26, the forecast said.
Shimla is likely to see rain, thunderstorms and rainfall today. The maximum and minimum temperatures likely to hover around 9 degrees Celsius and 3 degrees Celsius, respectively. Rainfall and snowfall will continue in Shimla in the coming days with minimum temperature likely to drop to 2 degrees Celsius. Shimla has the possibility of seeing light to moderate rain and snowfall from Jan 22 to 24.
A strong western disturbance has also been active in Himachal Pradesh, leading to forecast of heavy rain and snowfall in the mountains for the next few days starting Friday.
In Jammu and Kashmir, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted significant snowfall in the Kashmir Valley and the Pir Panjal range beginning early Friday. According to IMD Srinagar, successive western disturbances are likely to influence the region's weather for almost a week.
IMD Srinagar director Mukhtar Ahmad said parts of south Kashmir are expected to witness moderate to heavy rainfall and snowfall, while north Kashmir could also receive heavy snow. High-altitude locations such as Zojila Pass, Gulmarg and areas of Kupwara may record snowfall of two to three feet.
Authorities have intensified preparedness measures in view of the forecast. In Kulgam district, officials said 232 pregnant women who are due to deliver this week have been admitted to hospitals as a precautionary step. The IMD has cautioned that the snowfall may disrupt road connectivity, trigger landslides along major highways and impact air services across the region.
