He Quit A Rs 50 LPA Job, Now This Gurugram Techie Has A Rs 5 Crore Momo Business
While many young professionals pursue high-paying corporate careers, a man from Gurugram chose a different path. He left a lucrative job to start his own business, and the results have been remarkable. Saket Saurabh is the co-founder and CEO of The Momos Mafia, a venture he launched in 2023 that has crossed Rs 5 crore in revenue in just two and a half years. Before turning entrepreneur, he had a successful corporate journey.
After graduating from NIFT Delhi in 2014, Saket co-founded Wowflux, which was later acquired by FlixStock. He then joined FlixStock as a product manager, earning an annual salary of Rs 52 lakh. Even while working in the corporate world, Saket explored the food business by helping his sister and brother-in-law run Bamboo Cafe in Gurgaon. Although the cafe served items like parathas and biryani, it was the momos that quickly emerged as the crowd favourite.
The First Momo Cart Experiment
Speaking with Hindustan Times, Saket Saurabh explained, “It was a generic cafe. We were selling everything. As an experiment, we opened a small canopy selling only momos right outside the cafe. After that small canopy, we put up a cart at a location called Infotech in Gurgaon. That cart did great business. We were doing Rs 10,000 to Rs 12,000 in sales every day. We met many office workers at that stall who wanted to open their own momo carts. That's how the franchising business started."
“In the first year, we opened several carts. This was the good side, but the cart business was also volatile. We ran into various problems. Some days, the authorities would remove carts; we ran into staffing problems, and sometimes the weather did not cooperate. Operationally, there were many challenges," the entrepreneur added.
Introducing The CSR Model
Saket Saurabh realised that selling momos from small carts alone was not a scalable business. He understood that a brand worth hundreds of crores cannot rely just on street carts. At the same time, he knew that most people buy momos from roadside stalls. To solve this, in the second year, he began opening small shops and placing momo carts outside them. He named this approach the CSR model, which means Cart Service Restaurant.
Sharing the detailed breakdown of his earnings, the entrepreneur shared that in the first year, the company made Rs 16 lakh. During the first three months of the 2023-24 financial year, they earned another Rs 16 lakh. Last year, the total income reached Rs 2.2 crore, and this year they have already made the same amount. By the end of the current year, they expect to reach Rs 3 crore. In just two and a half years, the business has earned more than Rs 5 crore.
Current Business Setup
The Momos Mafia became an official company in January 2024. It is run by five partners, Saket Saurabh, Ekta Kumari, Gautam, Surya Prakash and Shubham Thakur. Right now, the business has over 40 Momo carts, 20 small shops and two full quick service restaurants.
