Haryana woman drowns 6-yr-old niece for looking ‘more beautiful’ than her

A woman was arrested in Haryana's Panipat after she killed her six-year-old niece amid wedding festivities in their family, police said on Wednesday.
The accused has been identified as Poonam, who allegedly drowned the child in a water tub. The victim, who is originally from Sonipat in Haryana, had come to Naultha village in Panipat's Israna area with her family to attend a relative's wedding, NDTV reported.
She was accompanied by her father Sandeep, mother, 10-month-old brother, her grandfather Pal Singh and grandmother Omwati.
The six-year-old suddenly disappeared from the celebrations on Monday, following which family members began searching for the child. The incident took place when the wedding procession arrived it Naultha.

The victim's father received a call informing him that the six-year-old was missing. After an hour of searching, her grandmother Omwati went to the store room on the first floor of the relative's house, which was bolted from inside.
Upon opening the door, she found Vidhi's head submerged in a water tub and her feet touching the ground, according to the NDTV report.
The child was then rushed to a hospital, where she was declared brought dead. Following this, the victim's father registered a First Information Report (FIR), alleging that she had been murdered.
Police launched an investigation, during which it was revealed that that the victim's paternal aunt had killed her.
According to the police, Poonam confessed to killing the child, while saying that the reason for the act was she did not want anyone to look “more beautiful” than her.
The accused further confessed to killing three children earlier, including her own son. She allegedly killed her sister-in-law's daughter in 2023, and also killed her son the same year to avoid suspicion, according to the NDTV report.
Poonam had murdered another girl earlier this year in Siwah village, giving the reason that the child was “prettier" than her.
