Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated at different times of the year across India according to their regional beliefs and the type of calendar being followed.
Hanuman Jayanti is observed to celebrate the birth of Lord Hanuman. The deity is known for his strength, devotion and bravery. Also known as Hanuman Janmotsav, this sacred Hindu festival is marked on the full moon day during the Chaitra month.
It is observed at different times of the year in India according to the regional beliefs and the type of calendar being followed. But as per Drik Panchang, Hanuman Jayanti, which falls in the month of Chaitra Purnima, is widely celebrated as the main one.
In 2026, Hanuman Jayanti will be observed on Thursday, April 2, according to Drik Panchang. The Chaitra Purnima Tithi will begin on April 1 at 7:06 am and will conclude on April 2 at 7:41 am. The Brahma Muhurta for that day will occur from 04:59 AM to 05:45 AM.
In Hindu mythology, Lord Hanuman is revered as the 11th Rudra avatar of Lord Shiva, born to Anjana and Kesari through the blessings of the wind god Vayu.
Hanuman, also known as the Monkey God, is believed to have been born on Chaitra Purnima, under a rare celestial alignment that signifies divine purpose and celestial strength.
The epic Ramayana – sacred Hindu scriptures – showcases Hanuman's pivotal role in helping Lord Rama rescue Sita from the demon king Ravana.
It is said that Lord Hanuman was born at sunrise. As a result, temples start spiritual activities before dawn and continue them after sunrise. Devotees celebrate Hanuman Jayanti by reciting Hanuman Chalisa, offering sweets, and decorating temples with flowers and flags. Many devotees fast from sunrise to sunset on Hanuman Jayanti, eating only fruits and satvik foods.
On Hanuman Jayanti, devotees follow traditional worship steps to perform puja: light a ghee lamp, perform abhishek with Ganga water, and wipe the idol clean.
Mix vermilion with ghee or jasmine oil and offer a sindoor chola, starting from Lord Hanuman's left foot. Adorn him with silver or gold foil, a sacred thread (janeu), and new clothes. Offer bhog and perform aarti, reciting Hanuman Chalisa at least once.
On Hanuman Jayanti, devotees observe fasts as a mark of devotion. The fast can be observed in different ways: a complete fast (Nirjala Vrat) without food or water, a partial fast (Phalahari Vrat) with fruits, milk, and water, or having one meal after the puja.
On this day, devotees read the Hanuman Chalisa or recite mantras to invoke his blessings for courage, success, and deliverance from evil. Here are a few mantras and their meaning:
