H1N1 Cases Rise In Delhi: 5 Signs Your Cold May Not Be 'Normal Viral' Infection
A runny nose, cough, fever or body ache during the monsoon is easy to dismiss as another “normal viral". But with H1N1 influenza cases rising sharply in Delhi, paying closer attention to flu-like symptoms has become particularly important.
Delhi is seeing a sharp surge in H1N1 influenza cases this season, with infections climbing to 1,344 from just 229 during the same period last year—an increase of nearly six times.
H1N1 is a subtype of influenza A virus and can cause symptoms that initially resemble other respiratory infections. While most people with influenza recover without requiring medical treatment, the infection can sometimes become serious, particularly among people at greater risk of complications.
So, how do you know when what seems like an ordinary monsoon illness deserves more attention?
1. Sudden Fever
One clue that points more towards influenza than a typical common cold is the way symptoms begin. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), influenza commonly causes a sudden onset of fever along with cough, headache, muscle and joint pain, sore throat, runny nose and a strong feeling of being unwell.
A common cold, on the other hand, is generally milder. However, symptoms alone cannot tell you whether you have H1N1 or another influenza strain. If you develop sudden flu-like symptoms—particularly while influenza cases are circulating—avoid automatically dismissing them as a routine seasonal illness.
2. Body Aches And Exhaustion Feel More Intense
Feeling slightly tired when you have a cold is common. Influenza, however, can leave you feeling considerably more unwell.
Muscle and joint aches, headache and pronounced fatigue or malaise are characteristic symptoms of influenza. You may find that normal activities suddenly feel exhausting and that you need significantly more rest than usual.
The combination of sudden fever, cough, body aches and marked tiredness is therefore worth paying attention to rather than simply assuming changing weather is responsible.
3. The Cough Is Persistent Or Severe
A cough is common across many respiratory infections, so having one does not mean you have H1N1. Influenza, however, commonly produces a dry cough, and WHO notes that the cough can become severe and may persist for two weeks or longer even as other symptoms improve.
If your cough is getting progressively worse rather than better, or is accompanied by breathing difficulties, it should not simply be treated as a lingering monsoon cold.
4. You Start Having Trouble Breathing
Difficulty breathing is very different from simply having a blocked nose. Influenza can occasionally cause serious complications, including pneumonia. Breathlessness, breathing difficulty, chest discomfort or a noticeable deterioration in your condition therefore warrants medical attention.
This is especially important for people who already have respiratory or heart conditions, as influenza can also worsen existing chronic illnesses.
5. You Seem To Recover—Then Become Sick Again
With an uncomplicated case of influenza, most people recover from fever and other major symptoms within about a week, although coughing can persist for longer.
A concerning pattern is when you initially appear to be improving but then become significantly unwell again, particularly if fever or cough returns or worsens. A deterioration after apparent improvement can be associated with complications or a secondary infection and should be assessed by a healthcare professional rather than managed indefinitely at home.
Who Is More At Risk Of Severe Influenza?
Not everyone who contracts H1N1 falls severely ill. But certain people have a greater risk of developing complications from influenza.
The WHO identifies pregnant women, children below five years, older adults and people with chronic medical conditions among the higher-risk groups. This includes people with chronic heart, lung, kidney, liver, metabolic, neurological or blood disorders. People whose immune systems are weakened by a medical condition or treatments such as chemotherapy or steroids are also at increased risk.
For someone in one of these groups, flu-like symptoms deserve particular attention, and seeking medical advice early can be important.
What Should You Do If You Develop Flu-Like Symptoms?
First, don’t panic and don’t try to diagnose H1N1 based on symptoms alone. Different respiratory infections can produce very similar symptoms, and a healthcare professional can determine whether testing or specific treatment is appropriate.
Rest, drink plenty of fluids and avoid close contact with others while you are unwell. Since influenza spreads primarily through respiratory particles released when infected people cough, sneeze, talk or breathe, good respiratory hygiene and regular handwashing can also help reduce transmission.
People at higher risk of severe influenza should seek medical advice promptly if they develop symptoms.
