Gurugram Traffic Challan Goes Digital: How Will It Work, What About ‘Drink & Drive’ Cases

The Gurugram Traffic Police have announced that challans in areas monitored by Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras will no longer be issued physically. The decision, according to officials, aims to make enforcement faster, more transparent and less dependent on manual checks. Further, the new step is a part of a broader initiative to modernise traffic management and reduce human intervention.

According to senior officials, the ANPR system will now serve as the primary tool for the execution of the new initiative at major intersections and busy city roads.

How many traffic violations camera can detect

The high-tech cameras can detect up to 14 different types of traffic violations, including overspeeding, jumping red lights, not wearing helmets, and wrong-lane driving. The cameras capture the vehicle's number plate, automatically process the data and generate e-challans in real time.

Why This Initiative

Dr Rajesh Mohan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), said the step was aimed at improving both efficiency and accountability in traffic monitoring. “With immediate effect, the ANPR cameras would issue e-challans to commuters on a real-time basis for flouting any traffic norms," he said, during a general parade event held on Monday.

Officials also added that the automated system would reduce potential human errors and confrontation between drivers and traffic police.

Internet's Response

Of course, the Internet has a lot to say about the rule. On Reddit, several users shared their concerns. A user wrote, “Kya farq padta hai, machine ko kharab bata denge ab," joking about how people might try to blame technical glitches.

Another commented, “So no one to stop me from riding without a number plate… right? Right guys??" highlighting a loophole in the system. A person else raised a practical concern, asking, “Can the fines be paid in an offline mode, or are only online payments allowed? If the fine can be paid in an offline format, there are still chances for corruption."

‘How will police catch drunk driving cases?' was a query raised by many. Well, all we can do is wait and watch.

Notably, the ANPR cameras are already operational at several key junctions in Gurugram. Authorities plan to expand their network in the coming months to cover more routes across the city. Meanwhile, physical challans will be discontinued at around fifty busy intersections across the city, as stated by the senior officials.
