Govt revokes detention of activist Sonam Wangchuk
The government revoked Sonam Wangchuk’s detention under the NSA after nearly six months, citing efforts to restore peace and promote dialogue in Ladakh. Wangchuk, detained amid protests for statehood and tribal self-governance, had been considered a key instigator of violence in September.
New Delhi: The government revoked the detention of Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act (NSA) on Saturday, nearly six months after the climate activist was taken into custody amid protests seeking statehood and tribal self-governance rights for Ladakh.
According to a home ministry statement, Wangchuk has already undergone nearly half of the detention period under the Act. He was detained on September 26.
The ministry said the government remained committed to fostering an environment of peace, stability and mutual trust in Ladakh so as to facilitate constructive and meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders. "In furtherance of this objective, and after due consideration, the government has decided to revoke the detention of Sonam Wangchuk with immediate effect...," it said.

The Centre had earlier defended his detention, telling the Supreme Court that Wangchuk was the "chief provocateur" behind violence in Leh on September 24 in which four people were killed and dozens injured. It argued that all procedural safeguards under the NSA were followed and that the situation calmed after he was taken into custody.
On Saturday, the ministry said the government said it had been actively engaging with various stakeholders and community leaders in Ladakh to address the aspirations and concerns of the people of the region.
However, it noted that the prevailing atmosphere of bandhs and protests has been detrimental to the peace-loving character of society and has adversely affected several sections of the community, including students, job aspirants, businesses, tour operators and tourists, as well as the overall economy.

The government also reiterated its commitment to providing all necessary safeguards for Ladakh. It expressed hope that the issues concerning the region would be resolved through constructive engagement and dialogue, including through the mechanism of the high-powered committee as well as other appropriate platforms.
Welcome release, but no space for violence: LG VK Saxena
Ladakh Lt Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Saturday welcomed the central government's revocation of the detention of Sonam Wangchuk.
Saxena stated that all concerns and issues can be resolved amicably through constructive dialogue and mutual understanding. He underlined that there is no place for agitation, bandhs, or violence in Ladakh and stressed that such actions do not contribute to meaningful progress. Instead, he said, the path of cooperation and peaceful engagement should be followed to achieve lasting solutions.
Independent MP from Ladakh, Haji Mohammad Haneefa Jan, on Saturday welcomed the release of activist Sonam Wangchuk following the revocation of his detention under the NSA, calling it "a great day for Ladakh" and urging the release of other jailed activists.
