Govt Approves MSP Hike For 14 Kharif Crops For 2026-27 Season; Sunflower Seed Gets Highest Increase
Among all crops, sunflower seed saw the highest absolute increase in MSP at Rs 622 per quintal, followed by cotton at Rs 557, nigerseed at Rs 515 and sesamum at Rs 500.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved an increase in the minimum support prices (MSP) for 14 kharif crops for the marketing season 2026-27.
According to the government, the MSP hike aims to ensure remunerative prices to farmers for their produce and encourage cultivation of pulses, oilseeds and nutri-cereals.
Among all crops, sunflower seed saw the highest absolute increase in MSP at Rs 622 per quintal, followed by cotton at Rs 557 per quintal, nigerseed at Rs 515 per quintal and sesamum at Rs 500 per quintal.
The MSP for common paddy has been increased by Rs 72 to Rs 2,441 per quintal for the 2026-27 season from Rs 2,369 per quintal in 2025-26. Grade A paddy MSP has also been raised by Rs 72 to Rs 2,461 per quintal.
The government said the MSP hikes are in line with the Union Budget 2018-19 announcement of fixing MSP at least 1.5 times the all-India weighted average cost of production.
The estimated margin over production cost is highest for moong at 61%, followed by bajra and maize at 56% each, and tur/arhar at 54%. For the remaining crops, the margin over cost has been fixed at around 50%.
The Centre said it has been encouraging cultivation of crops other than cereals by offering relatively higher MSP increases for pulses, oilseeds and Shree Anna or nutri-cereals.
The government also highlighted the rise in procurement under the MSP regime in recent years. Paddy procurement stood at 8,418 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) during 2014-15 to 2025-26, compared with 4,590 LMT during 2004-05 to 2013-14.
Similarly, procurement of 14 Kharif crops rose to 8,746 LMT during 2014-15 to 2025-26 from 4,679 LMT in the previous decade.
The MSP amount paid to paddy farmers increased to Rs 16.08 lakh crore during 2014-15 to 2025-26, against Rs 4.44 lakh crore during 2004-05 to 2013-14, the government said.
For all 14 Kharif crops together, MSP payments to farmers stood at Rs 18.99 lakh crore during 2014-15 to 2025-26 compared with Rs 4.75 lakh crore during 2004-05 to 2013-14.
