Got a Gmail ID that makes you cringe? Google is finally letting you change it
Google is finally addressing one of its biggest user complaints by allowing people to change their primary Gmail address without opening a new account.
Until now, only users linked to third-party email IDs could update their account email. Anyone with an “@gmail.com” address had to create a fresh account and move data manually.
This update will be welcome news for users who have awaited this change for years, especially those who created their accounts as children and ended up with informal or impractical email addresses.
How to change email address / check for the feature
Since the rollout is gradual, the feature may not be available to everyone yet, so users first need to check if they have access.
On your computer, go to your Google Account. Click Personal info in the left panel. Select Email. Click Google Account email. If you can't open this setting, the feature may not be available for your account.
If available:
Select Edit next to your email address. Enter a new email address not already used by another Google Account. Follow the on-screen steps. Google will send a verification link to the new email address. Open the email and click the link to confirm.
Safeguards and limits
To stop misuse, Google has added restrictions. After changing a Gmail address, users cannot create another new “@gmail.com” address on the same account for 12 months, according to Cyber Security News. Users can, however, switch back to their original address at any time.
Google has also warned of possible issues with third-party apps. “If you created an account with a non-Google site with Sign in with Google and you change your primary email address, you may lose access to the account you created on that non-Google site,” the company said in a blog post.
“If you can't access the account you created with a non-Google site, contact the non-Google site directly to recover your account,” Google added.
How this works
Changing your Gmail address does not delete your old email. Instead, the previous address is automatically turned into an alias. The old Gmail address will continue to function as part of your Google Account, meaning you can receive emails at both your old and new addresses without any disruption. All the data in your account, including emails, photos, and messages associated with your old email, remains completely safe and is not affected by the change, said Google. You have the option to reuse your old Gmail address at any time if needed. However, aside from not being allowed to create a new Gmail address on the same account for at least 12 months, you are not allowed to delete the new email address either. You can sign in to all Google services, such as Gmail, Maps, YouTube, Google Play, or Drive, using either your old or your new email address without any problems. Each Google Account is allowed to change its “@gmail.com” address up to three times, which means a total of four addresses (including the original one) can be used over the account's lifetime.
