Gopichand Hinduja Net Worth: Gopichand Parmanand Hinduja, the chairman of the Hinduja Group and one of Britain's richest individuals, passed away in London on Tuesday at the age of 85. The Indian-origin industrialist, widely known as ‘GP', was the second of the four Hinduja brothers who built the 111-year-old family business into a global conglomerate spanning automobiles, energy, finance, and real estate.
Gopichand Hinduja had been unwell for the past few weeks and died at a London hospital, the company confirmed. He is survived by his wife Sunita, sons Sanjay and Dheeraj, and daughter Rita.
Gopichand Hinduja's Global Empire Across 11 Sectors
Founded in 1914 by his father Parmanand Deepchand Hinduja, the Hinduja Group was started as a trading company in India before making a foray into the Middle East and later Europe. Under Gopichand's leadership, the group diversified across 11 sectors, including automotive, oil and energy, banking and financial services, technology, infrastructure, media, and real estate.
Among the group's best-known companies are Ashok Leyland, one of India's largest commercial vehicle makers; IndusInd Bank; Gulf Oil International; and Hinduja Global Solutions.
The conglomerate, which operates across 30 countries, employs over 2 lakh people globally. In recent years, it has made notable investments in electric mobility, renewable energy, and luxury real estate, including the restoration of London's historic Old War Office into Raffles London at The OWO, one of Europe's most prestigious hotels.
Gopichand Hinduja Net Worth: Britain's Richest Family
According to the Sunday Times Rich List 2025, the Hinduja family's wealth was estimated at £35.3 billion (nearly Rs 4 lakh crore), retaining their position at the top of Britain's rich list for the fifth consecutive year. The family's fortune had peaked at £37.19 billion a year earlier before a modest dip in valuation due to market fluctuations.
Their vast wealth stems largely from unlisted holdings in the Hinduja Group's global businesses, complemented by investments in financial services, logistics, and energy ventures.
He oversaw the multinational conglomerate with cross-sector interests, most recently adding the Old War Office (OWO) luxury hotel complex in central London to its varied business interests.
Succession and Legacy
Gopichand Hinduja took over as chairman in May 2023 following the death of his elder brother Srichand P. Hinduja, who was the family patriarch for decades. His younger brothers – Prakash Hinduja, who oversees European operations from Geneva, and Ashok Hinduja, who leads the Indian businesses from Mumbai – continue to manage the group's affairs alongside the next generation.
The Hinduja family's succession model follows a branch-based structure, where each brother's family manages specific geographies and sectors under a collective ownership framework. Despite occasional reports of disputes, the family has consistently emphasized unity and long-term stewardship of the group's businesses.
Symbol of Indian Global Enterprise
Gopichand Hinduja was known for his discretion, disciplined work ethic, and focus on strengthening India's presence in global business. G P Hinduja was known as a very vocal champion of closer India-UK economic ties and often addressed gatherings in London to exhort businesses to invest in the booming Indian market.
Under his leadership, the group maintained strong links with India while expanding aggressively overseas, turning the Hindujas into one of the most influential Indian-origin business families in Europe.
He was the recipient of a string of awards over the years, most recently a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to business and industry at the Lokmat Global Economic Convention here in August.
“We have always been working to see what best we can do between India and the UK because we believe our responsibility is to act as a bridge between the host country and the motherland," he had said recently at a business gathering.
In addition to business, the family is known for its philanthropy through the Hinduja Foundation, which supports education, healthcare, and heritage preservation projects in India and abroad.
His elder brother and the group's co-chairman, S P Hinduja, had passed away in May 2023. Together, the Hinduja brothers, including Prakash and Ashok, were among the most well-known Indian-origin business families in Britain.
