Google set to bet big on India with $10 billion Visakhapatnam data hub plan
Google plans a significant $10 billion investment to build its first Indian data center cluster in Visakhapatnam, with a 1 GW capacity. The facility will span three campuses and is slated for operation by July 2028, requiring extensive submarine cable and fiber optic infrastructure.
New Delhi: Google is set to invest $10 billion (Rs 88,730 crore, current currency conversion) to establish a data centre cluster of 1 GW capacity in Visakhapatnam in what would be the global technology giant's first such investment in India, according to details of the proposed investment accessed by ET.
The facility would comprise three data centre campuses near Visakhapatnam —at Adavivaram village and Tarluvada village, both in Visakhapatnam district, and Rambilli village in Anakapalli district. These are expected to be operational by July 2028. Construction of the data centre cluster would entail installation and landing of three high-capacity submarine cables, dedicated cable landing stations, and high-capacity metro fiber lines, and telecommunications infrastructure, per the details.
According to sources, contours of the agreement are likely to be formalised between Google's brass and Andhra Pradesh IT and electronics minister Nara Lokesh in New Delhi on October 14.
Google did not respond to ET's email query. Andhra Pradesh State Investment Promotion Board, headed by chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu, is expected to approve the investment proposal on Wednesday.
The project is expected to be the largest-ever direct investment by Google and its subsidiaries in India's digital economy.
Google and its subsidiaries currently operate data centres in 11 countries — US, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Ireland, Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Belgium, and Chile, spread across 29 sites. The data centre cluster in Visakhapatnam is expected to be Asia's largest till date.Naidu had signed a memorandum of understanding with Google in December 2024 — within six months of assuming power. People said Google had laid down certain requirements for the growth of data infrastructure.
As first reported by ET in its May 26 edition, Naidu had proposed amendments in the IT Act and Copyright Act to promote data cities. Subsequently, the Indian government circulated a draft policy providing a comprehensive framework for data centres.
Google's Asia Pacific team had flown to Visakhapatnam in May this year and Lokesh had personally taken them to inspect various sites on offer in the state.
The data centre cluster will become part of India's first international AI Infrastructure Hub, a large digital infrastructure region developed within a concentrated geographical zone. This hub will be able to deliver leading digital capabilities to power Andhra Pradesh's and India's economy and accelerate advanced research and development.
