Surya Grahan 2026: The first solar eclipse of 2026 will take place today, February 17, and it has already sparked curiosity among astronomy enthusiasts worldwide. Popularly known as the “Ring of Fire," this particular event is an annular solar eclipse. To mark the occasion, Google has introduced an interactive animation that allows users to experience an imitation of the solar eclipse directly on their desktop.

The feature is simple to access and can be experienced from anywhere. Wondering how to watch the fun solar eclipse feature?
Here are the steps to follow:
Open the Google Chrome browser.
Type “solar eclipse" or “Surya Grahan" into the search bar and press enter.
A graphic overlay will appear, showing a simulation of the Moon passing in front of the Sun, highlighting the Sun’s outermost layer, the corona.
The visual demonstration has been designed to help users understand how the celestial alignment works.

So what exactly is an annular solar eclipse? According to NASA, it occurs when the Moon is at or near its farthest point from Earth. Because it appears smaller in the sky, it does not completely cover the Sun. Instead, the Sun appears as a bright ring encircling the dark disk of the Moon, which is why the name: “Ring of Fire."
It needs to be noted that the eclipse won’t be visible in India as the alignment occurs in the Southern Hemisphere and will remain below the horizon here. The celestial event will be visible in parts of Antarctica and southern Africa. Research stations in Antarctica, including Concordia and Mirny, are expected to witness the maximum eclipse, whereas countries like South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe will experience partial visibility.

Amid the excitement, questions about health, safety, and even superstition have sparked interest among viewers. Many believe eclipses, or grahan, are inauspicious according to Hindu mythology. The reasoning: the Sun is worshipped as a major life force in the universe, and during an eclipse, it disappears, which some interpret as an omen of misfortune. To minimise the supposed negative effects of this celestial event, various rituals are often performed.

Consequences On Health
Medically speaking, the real danger during a Surya Grahan is looking directly at the Sun without proper eye protection. Even during an eclipse, harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays can damage the retina, leading to solar retinopathy. This condition may cause blurred vision, blind spots or even permanent eye damage. Regular sunglasses are not safe for viewing an eclipse.
Experts advise using certified solar eclipse glasses or solar filters. It’s also recommended to protect your skin from UV exposure by wearing sunscreen, protective clothing and limiting direct exposure.
