'Give Your Money Away, Shorties': Billie Eilish Calls Out Billionaires At WSJ Award

Billie Eilish made headlines at the 2025 Wall Street Journal Innovator Awards in New York with a striking message directed at the world's wealthiest individuals. Accepting the Music Innovator Award, the Grammy-winning singer called on billionaires to use their wealth for social good.

Addressing a high-profile audience that included Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, Eilish urged those with vast resources to act with empathy and generosity. “Love you all, but there's a few people in here that have a lot more money than me," she said. “If you're a billionaire, why are you a billionaire? No hate, but give your money away, shorties."

The 23-year-old artist's comments quickly spread online, resonating with audiences for their candour and conviction. Eilish's pointed remarks came as Zuckerberg, whose net worth is estimated at $227.9 billion, looked on from the crowd.

In her speech, Eilish reflected on the difficult state of the world, referencing social inequality and environmental decline as reasons for the wealthy to take greater responsibility. “If you have money, it would be great to use it for good things, maybe give it to some people that need it," she added.

Her message built on her ongoing advocacy for social and environmental causes. Earlier this year, Eilish pledged to donate $11.5 million from her Hit Me Hard and Soft world tour to organisations working on food security, climate justice, and carbon reduction. The initiative, first shared by Stephen Colbert, underscored her dedication to turning words into action.

Eilish has consistently pushed for sustainable practices within the music industry. In a recent WSJ Magazine interview, she highlighted her efforts to reduce waste and promote eco-conscious touring, from using biodegradable confetti to ensuring her crew follows plant-based catering.

“You can literally make all the same stuff with sustainable materials, and people just aren't doing it," she said. “Everyone can actually do it. It's just that mostly they don't."
