G20 Summit in South Africa to address geoeconomic challenges for Global South

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Johannesburg for the G20 summit. This is the first G20 summit held in Africa. The summit focuses on development issues for emerging economies. Leaders will discuss disaster resilience, debt sustainability, energy transition, and critical minerals. India, Brazil, and South Africa leaders will also meet.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a three-day visit to South Africa on Friday to attend the G20 summit in Johannesburg, the fourth consecutive such summit in the Global South, that would aim to address challenges faced by emerging economies amid geoeconomic volatility.
Briefing the media on Thursday, Sudhakar Dalela, secretary (economic relations) in the Ministry of External Affairs said the trip would mark Modi's fourth official visit to South Africa, following his bilateral trip in 2016, followed by BRICS summits in 2018 and 2023.
Dalela emphasised that it would be the first-ever G20 summit in Africa, and in that context would bring to focus development issues on the continent.
He said Modi will also attend a meeting of India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) leaders, on the sidelines of the summit. He is also expected to meet various other PMs including from Canada and Australia.
South Africa assumed presidency on 1 December 2024 and had continued the focus on development issues, especially those pertinent to Africa. Under the overarching theme of “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability” the priorities are Strengthening disaster resilience and response; Ensuring debt sustainability for low-income countries; Mobilising finance for a just energy transition; and Harnessing critical minerals for inclusive growth and sustainable development.
South Africa is the fourth consecutive developing nation to hold G20 presidency, helping keep the development agenda on the centre stage. This is the last presidency of the current cycle of G20 presidencies.
The US would take over the presidency next year, kicking off the second cycle of Presidencies.
South Africa has instituted three temporary task forces: Inclusive Economic Growth, Industrialisation, Employment and Reduced Inequality; Food Security; and AI, Data Governance and Innovation for Sustainable Development for delivery of high – level outcomes.
Apart from these, there are two other areas of focus in South Africa's presidency. One is the review of the work of G20 in the first cycle and the way forward, and the other is addressing the issue of high cost of capital in developing countries.
The presidency has also issued a report of the G20 Extraordinary Committee on Global Inequality, besides adopting the G20 Africa Engagement Framework. It is incumbent upon leaders to navigate differences and find common ground to deliver ambitious outcomes on issues of global interest and concern such as sustainable development goals, development and climate finance, energy transition, debt sustainability and transparency, and emerging technologies such as AI.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
