While the world obsessed over the gowns, trains, and red carpet drama at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the real insiders’ experience unfolded on the plates. The Met Gala 2026, themed ‘Costume Art’, didn’t just inspire what guests wore, it dictated what they ate. The dinner was not just a meal, it was a carefully choreographed extension of the theme, where food mirrored fashion in form, structure, and storytelling.
Olivier Cheng Catering, in collaboration with executive chef Shane O’Neil, crafted a sophisticated three-chapter menu that brilliantly mirrored both the exhibition inspired by the Northern Italian garden concept and the evening’s décor.
Event designer Raúl Àvila transformed the dining area at the Temple of Dendur into an immersive Northern Italian garden, complete with lush centerpieces of real fruits pomegranates, pears, black wine grapes, artichokes, and kumquats mixed with garden flowers, custom green and off-white striped tablecloths, and specially designed garden chairs.
Guests entered through an opening resembling a romantically aged Italian garden wall, setting a theatrical stage that seamlessly connected the tablescapes to the plates.
The evening began with a refreshingly intentional appetiser that paid homage to spring. A green tomato salad featuring elderflower, pine, and gooseberries set the tone. The dish played with visuals — the burrata cleverly shaped and tinted using herb-infused tomato water to resemble a green tomato, surrounded by vibrant herbs. It was a delicate nod to the freshness and seasonality of a shaped, rather than tamed, garden that perfectly aligned with the Northern Italian spring inspiration.
Notably, the menu respected longstanding Met Gala traditions. Messy ingredients like juicy tomatoes on bruschetta, onions, garlic, chives, and parsley remained strictly off-limits to maintain elegance and avoid any awkward moments among the impeccably dressed guests.
The highlight of the dinner was a majestic rack of lamb, described as sculptural and statuesque. Positioned as the centerpiece, the perfectly prepared lamb was accompanied by morel panna cotta, Parmesan gnocchi, asparagus, carrots, spring peas, and fragrant mint. The dish embodied the theme’s focus on form and artistry, turning a classic protein into a fashion-inspired statement on the plate.
This course represented the “statue" chapter, bridging the garden’s natural beginnings with the structured elegance of costume art. Every element was chosen not just for taste but for how it contributed to the visual narrative, proving that fine dining at this level is performance art in itself.
If the main course honoured statues, the desserts celebrated silhouettes. Cheng created three distinct creations, each inspired by iconic looks handpicked by Anna Wintour and curator Andrew Bolton from the exhibition.
The first featured raspberry-infused chocolate, red velvet cake, and raspberry chocolate cremeux, inspired by Alexander McQueen’s iconic Voss collection (Spring 2001). The second offered a strawberry pavlova with passionfruit curd and burgundy amaranth microgreens, drawing from Robert Wun’s dramatic bleeding coat (Spring 2023). The finale was a sophisticated white chocolate mocha with cocoa cake and dark chocolate ganache, echoing Christian Dior’s timeless bar suit from Spring 2024.
These desserts transformed fashion history into edible poetry fun, whimsical, and visually compelling closing the meal on a high note of creativity and precision.
The 2026 Met Gala menu succeeded because it didn’t merely feed the world’s most stylish crowd, it extended the exhibition’s narrative from the runway through the tablescapes and onto the dining table. In an event where every detail matters, Olivier Cheng proved that food can be just as expressive and memorable as the clothes.
This year’s dinner will be remembered not only for its elegance and restraint but for how beautifully it captured the spirit of Costume Art where fashion, form, and flavour became one.
