Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 75th birthday today is being marked in a rather unique way. Instead of just cake, greetings and celebrations, the day also sees the launch of the seventh edition of the Prime Minister's Mementoes e-auction, where over 1,300 gifts received by Modi are being put up for bidding. The auction begins today, 17 September, and will run until 2 October, giving citizens a chance to own pieces of history while contributing to a cause close to the Prime Minister's heart.
This initiative is not new. Since the first edition in January 2019, thousands of presents given to Modi have been auctioned, raising more than Rs 50 crore for the Namami Gange project, India's flagship mission to clean, rejuvenate and protect the river Ganga.
What makes it remarkable is that Modi remains the first Indian prime minister to dedicate all personal mementoes to public welfare, turning personal tokens into collective assets for the nation.
The latest edition brings together an impressive mix of cultural treasures and symbolic memorabilia. Among the prized items is a traditional Tanjore painting of Ram Durbar, a metallic Nataraja statue, a handwoven shawl from Nagaland, Rogan art from Gujarat depicting the Tree of Life, and a delicately embroidered Pashmina shawl from Jammu and Kashmir.
Adding a contemporary touch, the auction also features sporting memorabilia gifted by India's para-athletes who competed at the Paris Paralympics 2024. These tokens embody their resilience, excellence and courage, carrying stories that go far beyond the sporting arena.
Ahead of the online auction, all these items have been put on display at the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) in New Delhi. Visitors can view the diverse collection first-hand before deciding to bid, ensuring that each artefact is seen not merely as an object but as a story, a story of culture, respect and emotion.

Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, while announcing the auction, underlined its special timing and larger significance.
