From Mughals To Judiciary, List Of Controversies Surrounding NCERT Textbooks
A recent controversy emerged over NCERT’s new Class 8 Social Science textbook, which included topics like “Corruption in the Judiciary" and “Pending Cases." The Supreme Court strongly objected, with Chief Justice (CJI) Surya Kant stating that the judiciary’s image would remain untarnished. NCERT apologised and decided to remove the chapter, and the government recalled 38 copies of the textbook, of which 16 have been returned.
What sparked the controversy?
The contentious chapter, “The Role of Judiciary in Our Society," highlighted issues like corruption within the judiciary and the number of pending cases. The Supreme Court and senior advocates criticised the content as “inappropriate," claiming it could harm the judiciary’s reputation.

This is not the first time NCERT textbooks have been embroiled in debate. Recently, several controversies have arisen over changes in textbooks covering history, politics, and social issues.
1. Removal of chapters on the Mughal and Delhi Sultanate
In 2023-24, sections related to the Mughal Empire and the Delhi Sultanate were removed from history books for classes 7 and 12, which critics argued downplayed an important period in Indian history. Some historians saw it as an attempt to “change history." NCERT stated it was part of a “syllabus reduction" process to ease the academic burden post-COVID.
2. Maratha vs Rajput content debate
Another controversy emerged when new textbooks devoted more pages to Maratha history, with less space for Rajput rulers. Critics called this an unbalanced representation, arguing for equal importance of different historical rulers. NCERT responded that the textbooks were based on a new curriculum framework and topics were chosen by expert committees.
3. Controversy over Tipu Sultan
Debates also arose over the removal or reduction of content about Tipu Sultan, whom some view as an early freedom struggle warrior. Critics insisted his contributions should not be underestimated, while others argued for a balanced historical presentation, leading to prolonged discussions.
4. Changes regarding Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination
Political science textbooks were revised concerning Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination and related organisations. Opposition parties and academics claimed these changes could distort historical facts. NCERT clarified that the changes aimed to simplify and condense the language, not remove facts.
5. Syllabus reduction during COVID
During the COVID-19 pandemic, NCERT shortened chapters on democracy, the civil rights movement, the agricultural movement, and the environment. Some called it necessary, while others alleged deliberate omission of sensitive issues. NCERT explained it was a temporary measure to reduce students’ academic burden.
