From Kaziranga Corridor To Rail Links, PM Modi Returns To Assam With Big Infra Push Ahead Of Polls
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will begin a two-day visit to Assam on Saturday, combining infrastructure projects with cultural engagements, underlining the BJP's push to retain power in the state for a third consecutive term in the 2026 Assembly elections.
During the Assam visit, the Prime Minister will perform the bhoomi pujan for the Rs 6,950-crore Kaziranga Elevated Corridor Project, flag off new Vande Bharat Express services for the Northeast, and participate in a large-scale cultural programme in Guwahati. The back-to-back engagements highlight Assam's centrality to the BJP's development and outreach strategy under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
On January 17, PM Modi will arrive in Guwahati and attend ‘Bagurumba Dwhou 2026' at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex. Thousands of Bodo artists are expected to perform the traditional Bagurumba dance, with the event being positioned as a celebration of Assam's indigenous culture and a signal of the BJP's emphasis on cultural pride and grassroots engagement.
The development push will take centre stage on January 18. In Kaliabor in Nagaon district, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for the Kaziranga Elevated Corridor along National Highway 715. The project is designed as a wildlife-friendly elevated highway aimed at improving connectivity while safeguarding the sensitive ecology around Kaziranga.
He will also flag off Vande Bharat Express services to strengthen rail connectivity across the Northeast.
The BJP's high-visibility push contrasts with the Congress, which continues to face internal divisions and organisational challenges in Assam.
With repeated visits, marquee projects and a mix of development and cultural outreach, the BJP is signalling that Assam remains a top political priority as it gears up for the 2026 Assembly elections.
This will be PM Modi's second visit to Assam within a month. On December 20 and 21, he had travelled to Guwahati and Dibrugarh, where he inaugurated the new terminal building of the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, paid tribute at Swahid Smarak Kshetra, and performed the bhoomi pujan for the Ammonia-Urea Project of the Assam Valley Fertilizer and Chemical Company Limited at Namrup.
The airport terminal inauguration was projected as a major boost to Assam's connectivity and economic expansion, with the new facility designed to handle up to 1.3 crore passengers annually.

Ahead of his Assam engagements, PM Modi will also visit West Bengal on January 17. During the Bengal leg, he will flag off India's first Vande Bharat sleeper train connecting Howrah with Guwahati and lay the foundation stone and dedicate multiple rail and road projects in Malda.
He is also scheduled to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for development projects in Hooghly district on January 18.
