Tejashwi Yadav: From Bihar’s youngest deputy CM to a leader cornered by defeat, dissent and family strife

When Nitish Kumar switched sides in August 2022 to form a government with the RJD, Tejashwi returned as Deputy Chief Minister with greater experience and confidence. He oversaw recruitment drives and witnessed more than five lakh government jobs being filled. Over 2023, his stature within the party rose sharply, his face dominated RJD campaign posters and internal messaging cast him as Bihar's future, with slogans that centered on his name.
Tejashwi Prasad Yadav entered Bihar's political arena with a rare advantage. As Lalu Prasad Yadav's son and heir apparent, he inherited not just a party but a legacy. In 2015, at age 25, he walked into the Bihar secretariat as the youngest deputy chief minister, a debut that would embed him permanently in the political imagination of Bihar.
For many within the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Tejashwi symbolised generational transition and the promise of a different political future. His speeches centred on jobs and governance, and by 2020 he led the RJD to 75 seats, making it the single largest party in the Bihar assembly. His ten lakh jobs promise struck a chord with young voters and pushed RJD to the front of the 2020 contest, even as NDA retained power. Bihar's political map seemed poised for a redraw.
But the alliance did not last. In January 2024, Nitish once again severed ties with the RJD and realigned with the NDA, setting the stage for a difficult 2025 election for Tejashwi.
By the time the 2025 state assembly elections approached, Tejashwi stood as the INDIA bloc's chief ministerial aspirant. A decade-long arc of political ascent had brought him to the threshold of realising a long-held ambition.
It was at that moment that everything began to fall apart.
The 2025 election verdict that tore through the RJD
The election returned a harsh truth for the RJD, and a harsher one for Tejashwi. The party's tally collapsed from 75 seats to just 25 out of the 143 it contested. The NDA swept to a massive majority with 202 seats, powered by the BJP's 89 and the JD(U)'s 85. The INDIA bloc's performance across the state only deepened the sense of defeat.Tejashwi himself scraped through in Raghopur, a seat he had previously won more comfortably and that symbolised his personal stronghold. This time the margin was narrow enough to bring unease into his inner circle and signal a clearer shift in voter sentiment.
From EVM to fear of the return of Jungle raaj, several factors were blamed for the shocking defeat. The deliberate attempt to rebrand itself for a new generation of voters also backfired. Senior leaders acknowledged that the party had consciously removed Lalu Prasad Yadav's image from most posters and foregrounded Tejashwi.
Slogans such as Tejashwi 2025 to 2030, Tejashwi bharosa hai and Tejashwi sang milkar badlenge Bihar were meant to present him as the party's unchallenged face. Yet none of this overcame the incumbency the RJD had faced during its time in government or the swings that were already underway.
A leadership shaken by revolt inside the family
Just as the electoral loss unsettled the party, an internal crisis ripped through the Yadav family with unprecedented ferocity. Tejashwi's sister Rohini Acharya, who had famously donated a kidney to Lalu Prasad Yadav three years ago, posted a series of explosive claims. She alleged that abuses were hurled at her, that she took crores of rupees for donating a bad kidney, and a slipper was picked up to threaten her. She even claimed she was pushed out of her home by Tejashwi, his aide Sanjay Yadav, and Rameez. Her posts said she had left home “amid sobs” and that she had quit politics and distanced herself from the family. She asserted she had committed a sin by donating her kidney without consulting her husband or in-laws and without thinking of her children. The accusations went beyond personal anguish. She amplified posts alleging that Rameez was a murder accused and that grassroots workers were ignored by strategists who sidelined genuine feedback.
The public nature of the feud shocked even seasoned RJD leaders. For a party that had weathered decades of political storms, this was a crisis originating from its core.
The moment Tejashwi said he was willing to step aside
The RJD legislature party meeting became the stage where Tejashwi's strain became visible. Emotionally charged and evidently troubled, he told lawmakers they were free to choose another leader to head the RJD in the assembly. According to those present, he said MLAs had the “option to elect anyone else as RJD legislative party leader.” He asked, “What to do? Do I see the party? Or the family?”The remark stunned legislators. It was not a resignation but a moment of vulnerability that revealed the weight of expectations collapsing on one individual. For the first time, he appeared to publicly acknowledge the internal pressures that had been silently accumulating.
Lalu Prasad intervened quickly. He asked legislators to continue with Tejashwi at the helm, and the MLAs unanimously re-elected him. But the incident left no doubt that the party was entering a phase of uncertainty.
Even Tej Pratap Yadav, his elder brother, moved separately by writing to the central government seeking clarity on whether their parents were facing any wrongdoing. It was an unusual step that underscored how scattered the family had become during the crisis.
Tejashwi's journey from the youngest deputy chief minister to the opposition's most recognisable face in Bihar has spanned ten turbulent years. His political arc held the promise of a transformative era for the RJD. However, it did little to help him win over Bihar.
