Taiwan-based Hon Hai Precision Industry Co (Foxconn) has hired close to 30,000 workers for its new iPhone assembly unit at Devanahalli, near Bengaluru, in just eight to nine months—marking the fastest ramp-up by any factory in India so far, people familiar with the development told The Economic Times. The rapid scale-up underscores Apple's push to diversify its supply chain beyond China, the report said.
The sprawling 300-acre facility is largely women-led, with women accounting for nearly 80 percent of the workforce. Most employees are first-time job seekers in the 19–24 age group, people cited by ET said.
“The factory began trial production in April–May this year with the iPhone 16 and is now manufacturing the latest iPhone 17 Pro Max models,” a person aware of the details told ET. More than 80 percent of the output is exported, the person added. Another source said the unit has the potential to employ up to 50,000 workers once it reaches peak production next year. “There are six large dormitories, several of which are already operational to house women employees, while construction of the remaining facilities is progressing rapidly,” the person said.
With further expansion planned next year, the Devanahalli facility is expected to house more women workers at a single location than any government or private establishment in India.
Migrant women from neighbouring states have also found employment at the plant, which is envisaged to eventually develop into a mini township offering residential facilities, healthcare, schools and entertainment within the campus, people tracking the project told ET.
According to estimates cited by the publication, in addition to free accommodation and subsidised meals, the average monthly salary for workers is about Rs 18,000—among the highest for women in blue-collar roles.
Foxconn, the world's largest contract manufacturer of iPhones, is investing around Rs 20,000 crore in the project, which is expected to become India's largest factory in terms of both production capacity and employment once fully operational.
“With a production floor area of nearly 250,000 square feet, the scale is massive by any measure and among the largest in the country,” one of the people said.
The new unit is set to surpass Foxconn's first iPhone manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu, which currently employs around 41,000 workers.
A government official told ET that the establishment of such a large facility represents one of the biggest success stories of the Modi government's efforts to raise manufacturing's share in GDP.
People closely following the Bengaluru project said the factory is expected to eventually operate up to a dozen iPhone assembly lines, compared with about four at present.
Apple has been steadily shifting iPhone production from China to India, aided by the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme launched in 2021. “Apple's operations in India are a shining example of government–industry partnership,” a government official told ET. “The size and speed of expansion seen here would have been unimaginable four years ago. The plant has set new benchmarks for manufacturing and exports from India.”
Against the backdrop of geopolitical uncertainties, India has emerged as a critical node in Apple's global supply chain, with rising production and exports. All iPhone models are now manufactured in India from the start of production and exported worldwide.
Apple's rapid scaling in India has been supported by the expansion of its local supply chain to nearly 45 companies, including component manufacturers and sub-assembly players, ET reported.
Apple works closely with its partners to build the ecosystem, covering everything from workforce training to support for local suppliers. For skill development, Apple deploys its own training modules. Newly hired women—mostly high school or polytechnic graduates—undergo six weeks of on-the-job training before being integrated into iPhone production lines.
