Founder Says He Completed 15K Steps Daily On Bali Trip, But Delhi Streets Feel ‘Like An Assault…’
Utkarsh Goklani, a Delhi-based entrepreneur and founder of Wyzr, recently returned from a nine-day trip to Bali with a striking observation. In Bali, he could easily walk 15,000 steps a day without stress. “The streets belong to the people," he said, describing towns where vehicles are limited, bicycles move freely, and pedestrians move without hurry or noise. He was amazed by cities designed for people instead of cars, including a beach town where no vehicles are allowed.
Back in India, the “walk feels like a constant assault on the senses," due to broken pavements, constant traffic and honking. The streets feel unfriendly rather than welcoming. Goklani believes this is why health movements struggle to grow in India. A healthy lifestyle needs proper streets, parks and safe spaces to move around. Good infrastructure is not just something extra; it is the first step needed to make exercise and active living possible.
Entrepreneur Shares Why Infrastructure Matters
Taking to LinkedIn, Utkarsh Goklani wrote, “This week, I walked 15,000 steps daily, without even trying. Only one thing changed. I am in Bali, where walkways are part of the city infrastructure, there exists an entire beach town which allows no vehicles to ply. Only bicycles, and your good ol’ feet. People own the streets in a way I have never quite seen in India, unhurried and unbothered, moving through a city that had been designed around their presence rather than despite it. Didn’t hear a single horn in the last nine days. This is how a mind completely at peace feels like,"
“The same person. Completely different environment. Back home, stepping out to walk feels like a constant assault on the senses. Broken footpaths, relentless traffic, persistent honking, the low-grade vigilance of someone who knows the street was never really designed for them. And then we wonder why a fitness movement hasn’t taken off in India. Why people aren’t stepping out. Why are lifestyle diseases climbing? You cannot will a healthy culture into existence. You have to build it, literally. Infrastructure isn’t the support system for a health movement. It is the prerequisite," the founder added.

Reacting to the post, a user wrote, “It feels like a no‑brainer that when streets belong to people you don’t just get more steps in – you also get closer communities, more real conversations, and a slower pace of life that supports our mental health."
Another shared, “So relatable. In ’24, I went to Dharamshala-McLeodganj. I was walking on average 10K every day, I was not checking my phone, I didn’t watch any content. I like that version of me, but it vanishes within a week of being back in the city."
“After the amount of taxes we pay, it’s a shame that we don’t even have walkable roads. Let alone dedicated walking tracks," a comment read.
An individual stated, “I think we all will need to move towards a healthy lifestyle and walking will be a part of it, but sadly, it is high time India needs to build the right infrastructure for it."
Another mentioned, “I tried 15K steps in India, and its is a task in itself. I have to dedicatedly block my calendar both morning & evening for walking in the park and then go to the airport ( and hope my boarding gate is far away to get more steps."
One more user explained that in Europe, streets and footpaths are built so that people enjoy walking. In many Asian cities, like Hanoi, Bangkok and Indian cities, the situation is very different. Footpaths are narrow, uneven, crowded with shops or full of trash, which makes walking uncomfortable. Because of this, people avoid walking even for short distances. There are some exceptions, like Singapore and Bali, where sidewalks are well-maintained.
