Former Bangladesh PM Khaleda Zia’s Health Sees Sudden Deterioration: Report
Khaleda Zia's physical condition suddenly deteriorated. She was moved to the internsive care unit early Monday after her condition worsened late Sunday night. Doctors have placed her on ventilation support.
A senior BNP leader who visited Evercare Hospital on Monday evening told news outlet Prothom Alo that he had spoken to the doctors. “Her condition is critical. But she is on ventilation, not on full life support," he said.
Earlier, around 1.45 pm on Monday, BNP Vice Chairman Ahmed Azam Khan told reporters that Khaleda Zia had become “very critical", adding that her condition had worsened since Sunday night.
Ahmed Azam Khan went to Evercare Hospital to see Khaleda Zia but was not allowed inside.
“She is currently on ventilation support. From CCU to ICU, and then ventilation or life support, whatever you call it. Beyond these technical terms, I will just say she is in a very critical condition. She is fighting to return to us. She has not yet reached a state where we can say she is improving," Khan was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
The BNP chairperson had been almost unresponsive since last Wednesday. She spoke a little on Saturday, but doctors said the overall crisis remained.
They warned that the next few days would be extremely important. Without stability in her kidney function, it would be difficult for her overall condition to improve.
A team of specialist doctors from China arrived at Evercare Hospital to assist with Khaleda Zia's treatment. They met some members of her existing medical board around 7 pm.
Her personal physician, Dr Al Mamun, told reporters that a five-member Chinese medical team had reached the hospital. The main group of Chinese doctors is expected to arrive on Tuesday.
Khaleda Zia is being treated under a medical board that includes specialists from Bangladesh, Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States, and London Clinic. The Chinese doctors have joined this team to assist.
Khaleda Zia has been hospitalised since November 23 and is suffering from severe complications including liver failure, reduced kidney function, respiratory distress, diabetes and several other conditions. Due to recent deterioration, she was kept in the High Dependency Unit (HDU), which is similar to ICU care. Early Sunday, she was shifted from the HDU to the ICU.
