Foreign Investors Dump Record $12 Billion India Stocks In March On War
Foreign investors are pulling money out of Indian equities at an unprecedented pace, as a global risk-off sentiment and rising energy costs cloud the country’s growth outlook, according to a report by Bloomberg.
Overseas investors have sold a net $11.7 billion worth of Indian shares through March 25, data compiled by Bloomberg showed. This puts the market on track for its steepest monthly outflow on record, with total withdrawals in 2026 already crossing $13 billion—close to levels seen over the entire previous year.
While rising oil prices have weighed on several Asian economies that rely on imports, the scale of outflows from India reflects already fragile investor sentiment. Even before the geopolitical tensions escalated, concerns were building around a weakening rupee, modest earnings recovery and stretched valuations.
The surge in energy prices has further amplified these pressures, with investors increasingly questioning the near-term attractiveness of Indian equities.
Market participants say the absence of a strong catalyst is keeping foreign funds on the sidelines, even if geopolitical tensions ease.
“As of now, it is a grim picture and there is no immediate catalyst suggesting it is changing," said Siddharth Chatterjee of Franklin Templeton Investment Solutions, adding that weak earnings and sluggish domestic demand are weighing on the India growth narrative.
Global investment banks, including Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and UBS Global Wealth Management, have turned more cautious on Indian equities.
Goldman Sachs recently downgraded the market, warning that “higher-for-longer" energy prices could hurt growth prospects and corporate profitability.
The shift away from India is part of a wider pullback from emerging Asian markets. Since the start of the Iran conflict, global investors have withdrawn about $52 billion from the region (excluding China), putting it on course for its largest monthly outflow since at least 2009, according to Bloomberg data.
Over a longer period, Indian equities have seen more than $34 billion in foreign outflows over the past two years through March, coinciding with a phase of underperformance. MSCI’s India index has lagged regional peers in six of the last eight quarters.
Domestic institutional investors have stepped in to cushion the impact, investing over $13 billion so far this month. However, their buying has not been enough to offset persistent foreign selling or trigger a sustained market recovery.
Market volatility continues to remain high, reflecting uncertainty around the outlook. The India VIX is hovering near a four-year high, while volatility indicators in other energy-importing economies such as Japan and South Korea have eased from earlier peaks.
“It is too early to say foreign flows will recover as there is still little clarity on peace talks," said Anna Wu of VanEck Associates. She cautioned that a prolonged conflict could raise the risk of stagflation, potentially delaying any meaningful recovery in foreign inflows.
