Tamil Nadu: FIR blames TVK leaders for Karur tragedy
An FIR filed in the Karur stampede incident that killed 41 and injured 60 blames Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leaders for delaying actor-politician Vijay's rally to attract larger crowds. Though no case is filed against Vijay, the FIR cites poor crowd control, lack of arrangements, and violation of police conditions as key causes.
Chennai: Actor-turned-politician Vijay remained inside his campaign vehicle for an extended period at the rally venue in Karur on Saturday which led to overcrowding and restlessness among the crowd, according to a First Information Report (FIR) filed by the Tamil Nadu Police in the stampede incident that killed 41 people and left 60 injured.
The police has not filed any case against Vijay, but an FIR has been registered against three key leaders of his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
The FIR, filed by Inspector of Police G Manivannan, stated that the organisers had permission to hold the event at Velusamipuram between 3pm and 10pm with 11 strict conditions. However, according to the FIR, TVK leaders "deliberately delayed" Vijay's arrival for the rally in Karur by four hours in order to "draw larger crowds" and display political strength.
It has named three TVK leaders - Karur district secretary Mathiyalagan, state general secretary Bussy Anand, and joint secretary CTR Nirmalkumar - and said they "failed to regulate their cadres" even after repeated warnings and advice from the Deputy Superintendent of Police. Charges against the TVK leaders include culpable homicide not amounting to murder, attempt to commit culpable homicide, endangering life of others, disobedience to order.
The FIR said that volunteers even climbed on trees and narrow tin sheds and when they collapsed, it not only injured those beneath but also created panic which ultimately led to fatalities. "Crowds had gathered from as early as 9am after TV channels announced Vijay's arrival. Permission was granted for an estimated 10,000 attendees, but more than 25,000 people turned up. By evening, many in the crowd had already collapsed from heat, thirst, and exhaustion due to inadequate arrangements for water and medical aid," the FIR said.
Further, it said that the actor-politician's bus made multiple unscheduled stops, a de-facto roadshow for which no permission was sought, and he eventually reached Velusamipuram at 7pm, more than six hours behind schedule.
