FIA Closes Engine Loophole Ahead Of 2026 Reset: Mercedes Power Units Under Spotlight
The FIA has officially amended Formula 1’s 2026 engine regulations, bringing an end to months of political tension over compression ratios — and putting Mercedes-powered teams under pressure.
The sport is heading into one of its biggest regulatory resets in decades, with sweeping changes to chassis and power units. But a technical detail buried in Article C5.4.3 of the regulations sparked controversy during pre-season testing in Bahrain.
Under the 2026 rules, the internal combustion engine’s geometric compression ratio is capped at 16:1. Originally, that measurement was to be taken only at ambient temperature — effectively when the engine is cold.
Rival teams suspected Mercedes of exploiting that wording. The theory was simple: design an engine that measures 16:1 when cold but operates at a higher effective ratio once the power unit heats up on track. With thermal expansion at play, the potential performance gain was estimated at around 15 horsepower.
Ferrari, Honda and Audi reportedly raised concerns, and talk of protests ahead of the Australian Grand Prix began circulating.
The FIA has now stepped in.
FIA Revises Article C5.4.3
Following an e-vote by the World Motor Sport Council, the governing body confirmed that from 1 June 2026, compression ratios must comply with the 16:1 limit both at ambient temperature and at 130°C operating temperature.
Until 31 May 2026, the ratio will continue to be measured at ambient conditions only. From 1 June through the end of the season, engines must meet the limit in both cold and hot states. From 2027 onwards, testing will apply exclusively under operating conditions.
“A significant effort has been invested in finding a solution to the topic of the compression ratio," the FIA said, describing the outcome as a compromise.
The change accelerates the timeline: the FIA had initially proposed implementing the adjustment in August.
Mercedes Face June Deadline
Mercedes supply engines to their works team as well as McLaren, Williams and Alpine. The revised regulation now gives them a tight window to ensure compliance before June.
Mercedes have insisted that any change “will make no difference" to their performance.
