February 8, 11am: Himanta Biswa Sarma Sets Date With Media To ‘Expose’ Political Conspiracy
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that a press conference will be held at 11am on February 8, where, he claims, a major political conspiracy and an “entrenched system" will be exposed. Sarma clarified that the issue will not be limited to Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, but will address a broader and deeper political nexus.
Addressing the media, the chief minister made sharp remarks against opposition leaders, particularly Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi and Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi. He advised both leaders to resolve their seat-sharing arrangements with the Congress before February 8, warning that their political relevance would diminish after that date. “Confirm your issues related to seat sharing with Congress before February 8. After that, you will lose your importance," Sarma said.
He further alleged that APCC president Gaurav Gogoi is currently in talks with Akhil Gogoi and Lurinjyoti Gogoi, seeking their support ahead of the press conference. According to Sarma, Gogoi needs their backing, and therefore, the opposition leaders should settle all arrangements before the deadline. In a provocative statement, the chief minister also claimed that the opposition's government—whose only hope is ‘Miya politics'—would never be formed in Assam, asserting instead that “their government will be formed either in Pakistan or in Bangladesh". He went on to say that Akhil Gogoi would not be able to become the chief minister of Assam even in the next 500 years.
Reiterating his political stance, Sarma said he is not afraid of any individual or legal challenge. “Himanta Biswa Sarma never fears anybody. I do politics over the issue of Miya or infiltrators from Bangladesh. If someone like Harsh Mander files a case against me, I will not be frightened," he stated.
Human rights activist and former IAS officer Harsh Mander had filed a police complaint against Sarma at Hauz Khas Police Station in New Delhi around January 29–30, accusing him of delivering inflammatory hate speech targeting Bengali-speaking Muslims (referred to as “Miyas") in Assam. The complaint sought registration of an FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including: Section 196 (promoting enmity between groups), Section 197 (assertions prejudicial to national integration), Section 299/302 (malicious acts/uttering words to outrage religious feelings), Section 353 (statements conducing to public mischief), citing Sarma's January 27, 2026, public statements where he allegedly urged people to “trouble Miyas," claimed “4-5 lakh Miya votes will have to be cut" during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls, and suggested arrangements to prevent them from voting in Assam—remarks Mander described as promoting hatred, harassment, discrimination, and potential disenfranchisement amid ethnic/religious tensions.
Commenting on alliances, Sarma remarked that there is no fundamental difference between the BJP and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). “If BJP wins, the chief minister will be from BJP. Even if AGP wins, the chief minister will still be from BJP," he said.
