Faridabad Rapido Driver Assaults Journalist With Rod After Phone-Use Warning: ‘Maar Kyun Rahe Ho?’ | Video
A shocking incident has come to light after a journalist alleged that he was assaulted with a rod by a Rapido driver during a cab ride in Faridabad. According to the journalist, the incident unfolded following a safety-related disagreement during the journey.
Although the city where the incident occurred has not been confirmed, the vehicle's number plate seen in the video suggests that the car is registered in Faridabad, Haryana.
What The Journalist Alleged
The journalist claimed that the assault took place after he asked the Rapido driver to stop holding his phone to his ear while taking a call and to keep both hands on the steering wheel. He said the request was made purely from a safety point of view.
He further alleged that even before the confrontation, the driver had nearly rammed the car into a motorcycle. Soon after the request, the situation escalated and it led to the alleged physical assault.
Assault Caught On Camera
The video shared by the journalist captures a tense scene on the road. In the clip, a man, identified as the Rapido driver, is seen approaching the person recording the video while holding a rod in his hand.
As the clip continues, the voices of bystanders can be heard from behind. One person is heard asking, “Kiski gaadi lagi hai? (Whose vehicle has been hit?)." Another voice follows, saying, “Gaadi mein baith aur gadi aage kar (Sit in the car and move it forward)."
The exchange suggests that the vehicle had been stopped abruptly in the middle of the road which may have caused a traffic jam. The driver then gets back into the car.
At another moment in the video, a man questions the aggression and says, “Maar kyu raha hai usko? Tere paise mil jayenge kya? (Why are you hitting him? Will you get money for this?)." The driver is later seen picking up the rod again but people present urge him to move his car as it was blocking traffic. The video ends with the driver driving away from the spot.
Along with the video, the journalist shared a detailed caption explaining his version of the incident. He wrote: “Rapido driver assaulted with rod. Reason: I asked him to stop holding his phone to his ear in a call and put both hands on the steering wheel. Before this he'd already nearly hit a motorcycle."
“The real shocking thing is that there has been no response from Rapido for two days. It seems he is still on their platform. Be careful while taking Rapido please. It's a tiny bit cheaper than Uber but you might be risking your safety," the journalist added.
Users Flag Safety Concerns
The video led to a wave of reactions online with several users expressing concern and anger over the incident.
One user commented, “What this driver is doing is unacceptable; strict action is necessary."
Another user wrote, “Stopped using Rapido after a similar experience."
“This is a driver issue… irrespective of the platform. They watch reels or are constantly on the phone while driving risking passenger safety," someone else pointed out.
“Dear Rapido, kuch kar lo aise drivers ka. Customers maatha fodwaane aate hain kya aapke paas? (Dear Rapido, do something about such drivers. Do customers come to you to get their heads broken?)," a person questioned.
“I have stopped using Rapido myself. Most of their drivers are ill-mannered. Be it bikes, auto or taxi," read another comment.
Rapido Issues Statement
In a statement, a spokesperson, on behalf of the company, said, “We deeply regret the incident reported from Faridabad involving the alleged assault of a passenger. Any form of violence, misconduct, or aggressive behaviour is completely unacceptable and has no place on the Rapido platform. Following internal verification, the individual has been permanently blacklisted and removed from our platform."
“We are in direct contact with the affected customer and are fully cooperating with the police and local authorities to support their investigation," the statement added.
Talking about the safety of its customers, the company said, “Passenger safety is fundamental to how Rapido operates. All captains undergo mandatory background verification and onboarding checks, supported by behaviour monitoring, real-time ride tracking, and a 24/7 Emergency Response Team. Safety features such as in-app SOS, call masking, and late-night ride confirmations are built to provide immediate assistance to riders whenever required."
“As a platform operating at significant scale, we recognise our responsibility to continuously strengthen our systems, uphold the highest safety standards, and remain fully transparent with riders and authorities," the statement concluded.
