Farah Khan Reveals How Tees Maar Khan Failure Shook Her Confidence: 'After Om Shanti Om...'

Farah Khan Reveals How Tees Maar Khan Failure Shook Her Confidence: 'After Om Shanti Om...'
Filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan has delivered some of the most memorable Bollywood blockbusters over the years. After dominating the Hindi film industry as a choreographer for more than a decade, she successfully transitioned into directing with two massive hits — Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti Om, both starring Shah Rukh Khan.
However, the filmmaker later experienced what she describes as the most difficult phase of her career after the release of Tees Maar Khan.
Farah Khan Calls ‘Tees Maar Khan’ Her Career’s Darkest Phase
Released in 2010, Tees Maar Khan, starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, performed decently at the box office with a domestic collection of around ₹84 crore. Despite the earnings, the film was widely criticised and failed to replicate the success of Farah Khan’s earlier directorial ventures.
Speaking about the aftermath on The Ranveer Show, Farah described that period as one of the most challenging moments of her professional life.
“It puts you on the backfoot for very long. You get over it, bounce back and go to work, but in your mind you’re always on the backfoot. You don’t have self-doubt, but people try to push you towards that," she said.
According to the filmmaker, the criticism that followed the film’s release left a lasting psychological impact.
‘I Couldn’t Get Out Of Bed For Days’
Farah revealed that she was deeply affected by the negative reaction to the film and struggled emotionally in the days following its release.
“I couldn’t even get out of my bed for five or six days. I was crying constantly," she recalled.
She added that although social media wasn’t as overwhelming at the time as it is today, the criticism still reached her through friends and acquaintances.
“Thankfully, there was only Twitter back then. But there are always well-meaning friends who come and tell you who’s saying what. That makes you feel angry, then sad, and sometimes even brings on a panic attack because for the first time you feel helpless," she said.
Farah also admitted that some people in the film industry appeared pleased to see her experience failure for the first time.
Fortunately, she said, her personal life was stable during that period as she had recently welcomed triplets with her husband, editor Shirish Kunder.
How Failure Changed Her Perspective
Reflecting on her career, Farah acknowledged that before Tees Maar Khan, she had rarely faced professional setbacks either as a choreographer or director.
She recalled that her only experience with failure had been through her childhood, when her late father, filmmaker Kamran Khan, suffered a major financial setback after one of his ambitious films failed.
“But it’s a good thing I saw my failure because success all the time does make you overconfident and brash," she admitted.
The filmmaker added that the experience helped her reassess her approach to filmmaking and success.
Lessons She Shared With Brother Sajid Khan
Farah also reflected on a similar phase experienced by her younger brother, filmmaker Sajid Khan.
Sajid had delivered multiple commercial hits including Heyy Babyy and the first two instalments of the Housefull series. However, his 2013 film Himmatwala, starring Ajay Devgn and Tamannaah Bhatia, became a major disappointment.
Farah recalled warning her brother against claiming he had never delivered a flop.
“I used to tell Sajid not to say, ‘I haven’t made any flops.’ The moment you say that, it happens immediately," she said.
A More Grounded Outlook Today
Looking back, Farah admitted that during the time she was making Tees Maar Khan, she may have believed she had everything figured out after the massive success of Om Shanti Om.
“Don’t question me, I’ve just made Om Shanti Om — that was my approach on the sets of Tees Maar Khan," she confessed.
Today, she says, the experience has made her more grounded and reflective.
“I’m a little wiser now. I believe a lot in karma," she said, adding that she no longer takes pleasure in the failures of others in the industry.
Why Failure Often Feels Harder Than Success
According to psychotherapist Sneha Vashisht, founder of Happidition, the emotional impact of failure often runs deeper than success.
“Failures tend to hurt more than successes because the mind is naturally drawn to what feels threatening," she explained.
While achievements are often processed quickly, setbacks tend to linger because the brain treats them as warning signals. Over time, such experiences can affect confidence and self-perception, especially when they are accompanied by public scrutiny.
