F1's Missing Villain? Wolff Weighs In On Horner Exit: 'The Bad Is Gone'
Is this the long-awaited “enemies-to-lovers" arc between Toto Wolff and Christian Horner finally coming full circle? Not quite.
If anything, Toto just delivered yet another signature one-liner on the whole tiff.
The Mercedes boss didn’t sugarcoat things when discussing Horner’s potential return to Formula 1, suggesting the road back won’t be easy because he has “broken quite a lot of glass."
It sounds almost poetic, like a romcom metaphor, but there’s nothing lighthearted about how this chapter unfolded.
A Controversial Exit
Horner, who oversaw one of F1’s most dominant eras with eight drivers’ titles and six constructors’ championships at Red Bull Racing, was sacked in July last year. His departure followed a turbulent period marked by declining performance and serious internal disputes.
At the centre of it all were allegations of sexual harassment and coercive, controlling behaviour made by a female employee.
Horner was twice cleared — first through an internal investigation led by a lawyer, and then again when a separate legal review dismissed the complainant’s appeal.
Respect, Rivalry… and Reality
Still, as Wolff pointed out, the damage was already done — and it was irreversible.
“He has broken quite a lot of glass, and these things have repercussions in our microcosm," Wolff told the Press Association.
For all the tension, the Mercedes boss did concede one thing: F1 has lost a certain edge without Horner.
“I am in two minds about it," he admitted. “The sport is missing personalities. And his personality was clearly very controversial, and that is good for the sport."
Referencing Fred Vasseur, Wolff added, “It needs the good, the bad, and the ugly. And it is now only the good and the ugly left. The bad is gone."
No Happy Ending Here
As for any reconciliation between the two longtime rivals? Wolff was clear.
“Would I consider that he could ever be an ally or someone that shares objectives? I don’t think so."
Even so, there’s a flicker of perspective.
“You need to remind yourself that even your worst enemy has a best friend, so there must be some goodness," he said.
And Toto admitted that in a different world, maybe things could’ve been different.
“I am sure I could have hung with him over dinner and had a laugh."
Just not in this timeline. Not anymore.
