Ex-India Cricketer Sparks Fresh Controversy Over Virat Kohli’s Test Retirement: 'Usko Majboor...'
Former India cricketer Manoj Tiwary has said that he doesn't agree with Sanjay Manjrekar's claim that Virat Kohli left Tests to play an ‘easier format', i.e. ODIs, adding that the latter was definitely forced to leave the Test squad.
Kohli's retirement from Tests continues to spark debate, as his red-ball career defined an era for India. With peers like Joe Root and Steve Smith still racking up hundreds, the gap left by Kohli remains a hot topic.
Speaking to InsideSport, Tiwary challenged Manjrekar's claim that Kohli abandoned the ‘hardest format' to pursue the ‘easiest' one.
“I don't agree with him. Usko majboor kiya gaya tha. An atmosphere was created such that he had to say goodbye to Tests. He isn't someone who would just decide on his own to leave," Tiwary said.
“Yes, the decision came from his mouth, but everyone knows what happened behind the scenes. After knowing everything, how can you say he left the hardest format to play the easiest one just for runs?" Tiwary questioned Manjrekar.
Amidst ongoing debates about his Test retirement, Kohli let his bat speak in ODIs. Even though India fell short in the series against New Zealand, his brilliant hundred, a lone-warrior effort, kept India competitive and showed his enduring class.
Kohli's 124 from 108 deliveries was a masterclass in controlled aggression and composure. Shouldering the bulk of India's innings, he countered a disciplined New Zealand attack with crisp drives, sharp pulls and calculated fours.

As wickets fell around him, Kohli held firm, keeping India in the hunt. But after his dismissal late in the innings, the resistance crumbled and India were bowled out for 296 in 46 overs while chasing a challenging 338.
The loss not only handed New Zealand a 2-1 series victory over India but also marked a historic first; India had never before lost a home ODI series to the Kiwis.
