Ex-Assam Congress chief Bhupen Borah resigns from party, withdraws decision hours later
Congress’ former Assam unit chief Bhupen Borah on Monday withdrew his resignation from the party hours after stepping down, ahead of the Assembly elections, ANI reported.
In his resignation letter to Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Borah had claimed that he was being “ignored” by the party leadership, The Times of India reported.
“I sent my resignation to the Congress high command at 8 am this morning,” The Times of India quoted Borah as having told reporters on Monday morning. “This is not a personal decision…it is driven by concern for the party’s future.”
By afternoon, Jitendra Singh, who is in charge of the party’s campaign in Assam, announced that Borah had taken back his resignation.
“Borah is an important member of the Congress,” ANI quoted Singh as saying. “Sometimes there are differences of opinion with the Congress family. The Congress president has not accepted his resignation. The party leadership, including Rahul Gandhi, held a long discussion with him.”
He added: “We have resolved this through discussion”.
Earlier in the day, when asked if he would join any other party before the elections, Borah had said that no party has given him “any proposal till now”, The Times of India reported.
He added: “There has been no formal proposal from any political party, but it is a fact that I have not taken the decision to resign to bid farewell to politics.”
The Assembly elections will be held in March or April.
Borah was the president of the Congress’ Assam unit between 2021 and 2025. He was replaced by Gaurav Gogoi in June.
Borah had been tasked, just days earlier, with taking forward talks for a proposed alliance against the Bharatiya Janata Party, involving parties such as the Raijor Dol, the Asom Jatiyo Parishad, the All Party Hill Leaders Conference, the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), The Indian Express reported.
Borah’s resignation and its withdrawal came a week after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma directed the state police to register a case against him for allegedly indecent behaviour at a public place.
The chief minister instructed the police to initiate legal proceedings in connection with the incident in which Borah allegedly made “obscene gestures” and displayed “inappropriate conduct” during a public meeting, India Today NE had reported on February 7.
Sarma said that such behaviour had no place in public life and ordered that a case be registered not only against Borah, but also against Congress leaders Debabrata Saikia and Mira Borthakur, who were present during the alleged incident.
