EVM is okay if you win, bad once you lose: BJP, allies blast Oppn

The government has strongly refuted opposition claims that electoral failures are due to electronic voting machines and voter list revisions. Ministers stated voters have rejected the opposition, pointing to their own political shortcomings. They highlighted past instances of 'vote chori' and accused the opposition of trying to shield infiltrators.
New Delhi: The government hit out at the Opposition for blaming its electoral failures on electronic voting machines and the special intensive revision of electoral rolls.
Law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said, "The truth is that voters have rejected them (the Opposition) completely, and they are alleging faults in SIR and EVMs. But, in reality, they cannot see the shortcomings in their own politics."
Criticising Congress for targeting a constitutional body like ECI and demanding a discussion on SIR, Meghwal said, "They kept demanding a discussion on SIR and this is what delayed the discussion in the House. We suggested electoral reforms."
Meghwal cited a ruling by Congress leader and former Lok Sabha Speaker Balram Jakhar in December 1988 where he had said that ECI was a constitutional body and its functioning could not be discussed in the House.
Earlier, BJP MP Sanjay Jaiswal said BJP-JDU victory in Bihar was also a popular rebuff to Opposition's anti-SIR and 'vote chori' planks. He sarcastically "thanked" Rahul Gandhi for making SIR and 'vote chori' the sole focus of his campaign in Bihar. "In Bihar, Rahul kept saying 'vote chori, SIR'. There could have been many things to point out in a 20-year (JDU-BJP) tenure. This SIR and vote chori campaign of Rahul Gandhi confused the people of Bihar as to who was suffering this 'vote chori'. They could not see it anywhere." Taking a dig at Congress ending up with just six seats, Jaiswal said: "Last time, Rahul Gandhi took out a 20-day yatra. Now, he can do another yatra in Bihar with his Congress MLAs in a Bolero."
Claiming that SIR was designed to cleanse the electoral system, Jaiswal alleged the Opposition was trying to shield the infiltrators. "Bangladeshis and Rohingyas would be thrown out of electoral rolls", he said, adding BJP will focus on winning West Bengal. "In Bengal, we will raise issues of TMC misrule, infiltration and also about SIR".
"If the Congress wants to understand 'vote chori', it needs to know that the first time 'vote chori' happened was in 1947 when the entire Congress Working Committee stood with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, but Jawaharlal Nehru was made the prime minister. There is no bigger example of vote chori. Another big 'vote chori' happened in the J&K election that followed the Rajiv Gandhi-Farooq Abdullah pact."
JDU MP and Union minister Rajeev Ranjan Singh punched holes in the Opposition's campaign against EVMs and said, "You ruled this country for 10 years. You won your elections on the basis of these EVMs. Now suddenly, these EVMs are rigged? When you win Karnataka, then EVM is ok. When you win Himachal Pradesh, then EVM is good. But the moment you lose Maharashtra, then everything is wrong with EVMs."
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey alleged that Congress had subverted multiple institutions through constitutional amendments in the 1970s, alleging that even the President's office was "made toothless" through amendments during the Emergency.
Dubey rubbished Rahul Gandhi's earlier accusation that the current institutions have been "captured by RSS". He cited the 1976 Swaran Singh Committee, which led to the 42nd Amendment, saying it stripped the President of powers.
"In 1976, the Swaran Singh Committee was made, and they finished all institutions, which they are trying to do today too. In the Constitution, President is mentioned 121 times, and you will be surprised that with one amendment, Congress finished all the powers of the President. The president became a rubber stamp. Whatever the Cabinet will say, the President will approve, the institution was finished," he said.
